Launching the Game
Due to how MO2 works, it will need to be launched in some manner if you want to play the list, otherwise it would just launch the vanilla game. This means either opening MO2 - Yggdrasil VR.exe
and pressing the launch button, or editing the Launch Options in Steam (right click Skyrim VR and go to Properties...
) to "X:\Yggdrasil VR\MO2 - Yggdrasil VR.exe" "moshortcut://:Launch Yggdrasil VR" %command%
where the first "" is the path to your install of Yggdrasil VR.
You are now ready to use your new modded Skyrim VR setup! You can either open your Steam VR menu and switch to your Virtual Desktop View or take off your headset and manually use your monitor and mouse to click the “Run” button in MO2, making sure that "Launch Yggdrasil VR" is the selected option.
If asked to update the registry path, click "Yes". The modlists is using its own instance of the game folder, so any reshades or enbs you install need to go into that "Game Root" folder too.
Finally, here are the Narsil Bindings that the modlist uses, familiarize yourself with them before launching the game:
Once you’ve booted to the Skyrim VR you will be put into a loading screen and then loaded into the regular Skyrim VR hub. Don't panic, if your install went through correctly this is all as expected. You just need to select New Game and wait for the Realm of Lorkhan to finish loading. Design your character as you’d prefer and then name yourself as usual (Look around for a keyboard if it looks like it's stuck asking you for a name).
If the game crashes at this step, you've set up the wrong Open Composite version, you need to use the one linked above and put that in your Skyrim VR folder.
After choosing your name you'll be asked for your pronouns, and finally choosing a class. If at any point after pronouns the game freezes, restart the game and try again (not sure why this happens, it requires further investigation). The class doesn't limit what you can do, but it will provide a starting point and some boons depending on what you choose.
Once you’ve finalized your choices and given control of your character you’ll see a bunch of messages start popping up. These are the various mods and MCM menus initializing that you MUST WAIT THROUGH before leaving the Realm of Lorkhan. You'll know when this happens as a message will show up telling you it's done. If you're prompted for any input for mod initialization, press Yes.
After you're done setting up the character, go into your Magic menu (B
by default) and in the Powers tab select Dragonborn Awakening. Close the menu, and press the Shout button on your controller (A
by default) to select if your character will be a Dragonborn or not. If you haven't played Skyrim before, I'd recommend you choose yes, as choosing no will cut off a few quests preemptively, as you're just a regular person.
Once you've chosen this, you can use the same Magic menu to equip the VRIK Calibration Power to recalibrate your height (make sure to deselect it after, otherwise you might accidentally trigger it). Once you're done calibrating it I recommend opening the same menu and unequipping it, just so you don't accidentally trigger it while you're getting used to the controls.
If you don't know where to go from the Realm of Lorkhan, or you haven't used this mod before, think of it as writing your character sheet in D&D. Make up a character concept, grab any equipment, spells or standing stones that feel fitting, then choose a shard close to a place that would make sense for them to start in. If you just want to start the main quest, you can go straight to Whiterun, or if you want it to make sense for your character go to Riverwood, and you'll hear townsfolk talk about the dragon attack on Helgen and how someone needs to do something.. Head over to Whiterun to report it to the Jarl then. Whatever you do, don't follow the first quest marker from the Realm, unless you want a (quite unfair) challenge!
Note
By default Yggdrasil VR removes the Map menu in favour of a paper map approach that encourages you to focus on your surroundings to know where you are. If you find that too hard to get into or too annoying to play with exit the game, and in MO2 scroll to the Optional Mods category and enable Re-enable Vanilla Map. If you want to keep using the maps but need to use the full map for any reason (Vigilant for example doesn't have a map to buy) you can either look for a sign post and interact with it, or you can use the debug gesture done by hold pressing the stick on your left hand, then moving your hand in a down and back up motion fast (you’ll feel a vibration). Both of these open the vanilla map.
Congratulations on finishing this installation! Your journey has just begun - Enjoy it, and share your cool moments on the Discord! If you'd like a head start on some mechanics that might be easy to miss, check out the Gameplay Tips section.
P.S.: Don't disable any mods unless you know what you're doing, especially on an existing save!
P.P.S.: I made this modlist out of my passion for the game and its modding scene, if you end up liking the list I'd be grateful if you shared your thoughts on the discord server, it gives me great joy to see everyone enjoying my labour of love so much. If you want to do more than that (you don't have to feel pressured to, I have a decent job that pays me well), join my Patreon and also get access to my ramblings, upcoming mods and modlist updates, but most importantly... you also get a cool role colour on Discord!
