■ Dragon Survival - is global modification for Minecraft about playable dragons. It does not add new mounts in Minecraft, you become a dragon yourself! If you want to, of course. Other players can stay human if they want to. Dragon Survival is not as simple as it seems! Dragons have a huge number of big and small features that make gameplay for them unique! In our mod, you don't just change the player model, you get something more! This wiki will have general information about this mod, developers and content. This github wiki will be relevant primarily for 1.21.1.
■ Important note: What is written inside the game and in patchnotes takes precedence over what you find here. You can find the patch notes on Discord and in the version descriptions in CF.
■ The mod is currently available for these versions:
MC versions | Description | Modloader |
---|---|---|
1.14 and older | Not planned. | - |
1.15.х | VERY outdated. Do not play this. | Forge |
1.16.х | Fully playable. Not supported. Compared to newer versions, is outdated. | Forge |
1.17.х | Not planned. | - |
1.18.2 | Fully playable. Minimum support. | Forge |
1.19.2 | RECOMMENDED. Stable and playable. | Forge |
1.20.1 | Playable, but you'll get tired of the Neoforge/Forge drama when making a modpack. | NeoForge |
1.21. | Will be in the public domain for testing very soon. | NeoForge |
- Forge - version we use before 1.20.1.
- Neoforge - all versions after 1.20 use this modloader.
- Fabric - No. I don't like the division of the community into a huge number of modloaders, so I'd rather stay on Forge/Neoforge.
■ Warning to users: Asking for porting to any version is really annoying.
■ The main modification language supported by the developers: English and Russian. The other translations are done by fans and may be not complete.

■ Play as Dragon is a series of my modpacks, where the Dragon Survival mod plays a major role! All of these modpacks were made with a lot of love and are not just a set of randomly added mods. It took me months of daily work for each!
Official Modpacks | Version | Status | Description |
---|---|---|---|
Play as Dragon | 1.18.2 | Fully playable. Not supported. | One of the first modpacks, not balanced perfectly, but many people like it. The main goal is be a dragon and explore the harsh world. Your wings will not save you from many arrows and every cave can become your grave. Only the strongest and most agile dragons can survive in this world. The modpack is not hardcore if you think outside the box and allocate your dragon's strength properly. Only true dragons can pass this way. If you are human, you don't belong here. |
Play as Dragon Gothic Edition | 1.19.2 | Fully playable. Supported. | A much more complex modpack for those who want to test themselves. I personally don't consider this modpack hardcore, but considering the number of complaints apparently it is a hardcore modpack. It combines the creativity of Minecraft with the sternness of Gothic. You will be greeted by a variety of cruel animals on surface, and undeads will be lurking underground. Get ready for an interesting and long adventure! No wings at start :) |
Play as Dragon Comfort Edition | 1.19.2 | Fully playable. Supported. | A simplified modpack for all ages. Is a very light modpack for those who do not like hardcore, read quests and experience difficulties in survival. A good basis for playing in survival mode without unexpected encounters with monsters at night. Dragons also have all debuffs disabled. |
■ You DO NOT have to play the official modpacks to enjoy Dragon Survival! You are not restricted from creating your own modpacks! Especially if you don't like my modpacks. Don't torture yourself playing modpacks you don't like. Modpacks and mods are unrelated projects that have different customizations and moods. Take this into account when you play or ask for something.
■ Other unofficial modpacks can be found here and here.
■ Sometimes I have my own official servers, but since it takes a HUGE amount of time, I don't always do it. Check Discord for an official server or participate in other users' servers. You can leave an advert for your server as long as it fits the rules. Read here: #✎minecraft_servers
■ Addons = add-ons to the Java Minecraft mods. Not to be confused with Bedrock addons (=mods)!

■ I've always liked dragons and this wonderful game, but I've been playing alone and without modifications my whole life, until I accidentally came across this cultural phenomenon in 2020. I was fascinated by the amount of player-created content. There were so many mods created by them, many of which had to do with dragons. You could tame them, breed them, ride them, kill them, but in none of them could you BE a dragon. This really upset me. Being an artist very far from programming, modding and the minecraft community, I decided to take a risk and create my own mod. I had absolutely no knowledge or friends in this field. The only thing I had was a dream and the support of a community of dragon lovers. We have our own unique atmosphere here, which is unlike most other mods. It's been years, but I'm still actively working on the mod and I really like what we've got. I found a lot of good people along the way who helped make the mod much better than it was.
■ The owner and main developer is BlackAures. I have a lot of people helping me on my difficult path, their list is below. We are all adults and do modding in our free time. Sometimes updates are pouring out of the horn of plenty, and sometimes there can be a lull for a few months. In addition to the Dragon Survival mod, I also develop Play as Dragon modpacks. Please do not confuse these two projects. They are in no way related and you are not obliged to play Dragon Survival only on these modpacks. Sometimes I participate in other projects, mostly with Nocube or making small texture packs.
■ My main job is drawing dragons. I am an artist and have little to do with programming. When I first started making mods, I decided it was best to focus on what I do best - making models, textures and animations, as well as just managing the project. Communicating with users, writing wikis, making additional content and so on. Because of this, I had to spend a huge amount of money to pay programmers. I won't tell you exactly how much, but it was at least ,000. Not including my own work. It's probably a lot more than that now, but at some point I just stopped keeping track of money. I also still try to offer financial incentives to those who write code for free and on their own initiative. For this I use the money that mod fans send to Patreon.

■ "Migration to version [...]?"
- No porting. No. Not at all.
■ "Where are the mobile versions?"
- It don't interest the author and are never planned. On very powerful devices you can try to run mobile Minecraft java with Forge, but it will be very unstable and we advise against it.
■ "Dragon Survival and Play as Dragon are the same thing?"
■ No, don't confuse these two different projects. Dragon Survival is a separate mod about playable dragons. Play as Dragon is a series of modpacks based on Dragon Survival.
■ "What are you planning to add?"
- Any major updates are always kept secret and I don't like to share that information.
■ "What are you NOT planning to add?"
- We have no plans to: make dragons like background monsters, free transformation from dragon to human, many weapons, etc. I have a huge number of reasons not to do this. You can change a lot of things in the configs.
■ "I have lots of ideas!"
- The author has her own plan to work on a mod for a couple of years to come, and if your proposal is not fueled by own desire to work, with a high probability of this idea will not be implemented. I read all of your suggestions, but I very rarely respond to them. Even better if you implement your own ideas yourself, rather than shifting the work to others.
■ "Can other players continue to play as humans, or do they have to be dragons?"
- No, by default each player can choose whether or not they want to be a dragon at the start of the game.
■ "Does the mod have compatibility with X mod?"
- There is a very small list of mods that DS has a problem with. We never make incompatibility on purpose, on the contrary I am always happy for my mod to work with any other mods. Most of the food and recipes have automatic compatibility, which I prescribed myself. If any food does not work, write to me in discord with the full
id
of the item.
■ "Where is firebreath and other magic?"
- Update to the actual version of the mod or read about how to use magic.
■ "How do I set up a mod? Where are settings?"
- Most mods has a special file in which there are settings. How to remove the first-person model, how to make a dragon bigger, how to increase the chance of dust, return the player's nicknames, and so on? Just use a search inside the folder. More info here - Start and Setting
■ "Why not make the dragon model bigger?"
- I think that all big models in Minecraft look awful and unnatural. The whole gameplay is designed for the player to be 2 blocks tall and anything bigger than that breaks the game. The idea of having a huge model is fun until you try to survive with it yourself. Trust me, you won't like the results. But if you don't believe me, just use the configs! Big dragons have their own interesting features and bonuses in the configs.
■ "I've found a bug and I'm ready to thoroughly describe it."
- We would appreciate you to send logs, crash files and error descriptions to issues. Please do not forget to specify the version of the mod when this error occurs, single player or multiplayer, what version of forge and geckolib you have. Ideally, if you attach the file from the "crash" or "log" folder in .minecraft.
■ "Do you have your own game server to play with other dragons?"
- You can find many servers with DS in Discord here.
■ "Are there any good modpacks?"
- Use official search on CF or special site. Play as Dragon is my own modpack series with Dragon Survival.
■ "Why don't you add the ability to turn from dragon to human all the time without losing progress?"
- The answer is simple: DS is a mod about being a dragon, not a human! If you don't like it, use configs -
saveGrowthStage
andsaveAllAbilities
. But how can you call yourself a dragon after that?
■ "Why are there so few dragon? Where are wyverns, serpents, hydras?"
- Lost somewhere. Maybe on new versions?
■ "New dragon species?"
- The mod is planned strictly for 3 species and it was never planned to expand. BUT. We've worked hard to make it possible for you to add new species yourself. So just take it into your own hands.
■ "I don't like the textures/models/animations"
- Create your own resource pack. Instructions.
■ "I want to create my own skin. Where can I download a model for skins and does it cost any money?"
- Uploading your skins to our library is completely free, as long as you create the texture yourself rather than asking the mod author to draw it for you. The library currently contains approximately 2000+ skins that players have made themselves. Be sure to read all the articles about creating skins so you can speed up your work and avoid making common mistakes. If you don't want to draw the skin yourself, you can order the skin for a $100. Better email me before you pay!
■ "Will the magical predators return?"
- Alas, I will most likely cancel this content.
■ "Why does the mod have a different name in different places?"
- Originally the name of the mod was called "Dragons Survival", but over time we realized that it is difficult to use a name that contains 's . At a vote in discord it was decided to rename the mod to "Dragon Survival", but many things can no longer be renamed, so you can meet different variants of spelling. In general, both options are correct. Play as dragon is the name of a MODPACK, not a MOD. Please do not confuse these two different projects. Because when you ask your DS question and call it Play As Dragon, you're almost guaranteed to get the wrong answer, as DS settings are often very different in modpack and clean version.
■ "How do I look for information about mods?"
- First of all, check carefully what you can't find inside the game. There's a good chance it was right under your nose. There is nothing wrong if you ask about it, but it is better to look for the information yourself. No matter what exactly you're looking for or what mod it's related to, it's best to resort to this search tactic before asking for something:
- Open the page mods on Curseforge (this is the only place where 80% of the authors put their mods and all the information);
- Search there for a link to any Wiki or discord server. Most of the larger mods have their own wikipedia, while the smaller ones describe everything completely on their own CF page;
- Check out the latest comments on the CF page. Perhaps someone else has recently encountered the same issue as you.
- If you can not find information on the Wiki (or there is no wiki) go to the discord server of this mod and use the keyword search in all chats. For example, you need to know something about flying, write in the search words "wing" or "fly". There is a 98% chance someone already had a similar question to yours and it has an answer. Personally, I've used this method many times and have gotten information dozens of times faster than when you ask and wait for an answer yourself. This applies to absolutely any game.
■ "Where is Aternos?"
- Please stop asking about Aternos and other hosts!!! I have nothing against them having my mod, but they are asking for permission to distribute the mod to all sites, not just their own. I don't want to do that! Ask them questions, not me! * angry noises *
■ "Why isn't the mod on [...] site/launcher/host?"
- The author publishes his mod ONLY on CurseForge. I also allowed our Chinese colleagues to upload the mod to their site because they don't have access to CF. If you find our mod anywhere else, know that it's a pirated version. We are not responsible for any viruses you find there and we get no benefit from uploading to any resources and will never do so. When you visit CurseForge, all authors get a small percentage of the advertising this site shows. It's not much at all (about 20$ per month), but either way it gives all of us a little more support and a chance to get noticed. Please don't use pirate sites. It only benefits the scammers.
■ "Some things seem silly to me. Why do items fly near to the dragon? Does that make sense?"
- Yes, this mod is based on my lore, which was created a long time ago and is gradually being finalized. If you don't like something uses the configs.
■ "Is eating dragons from other mods (like EndDelight) cannibalism?"
- No, as they are completely different and dissimilar organisms. All dragons in the mod came from mixing an element with humans. Eating other Dragon Survival dragons and humans would be considered cannibalism.
■ Still have questions about Dragon Survival? Ask them in the Discord Server! I always try to help everyone as much as I can.
