[Bug]: `Error: premature close`

Describe the bug

Problem: whenever I was in the process of unlocking the wallet using the popup, I entered my password and changed networks (to a non responding one and back to a working one). MetaMask started displaying the error premature close any time I opened and close the popup.
After that, whenever I tried dapp interactions they started to fail (not opening the popup, only after some time )

Steps to reproduce

1. Open popup
2. Add password to unlock the wallet
3. Change networks to a non responding network (ie. optimism without supported infura id)
4. Change back to mainnet
5. Close popup
6. Open popup
7. See console -- everytime you close the popup the error is triggered
