Newsstand vs Standalone publications in Baker 4.0

Davide Casali edited this page May 4, 2013 · 6 revisions

Since version 4.0, Baker has a shelf that supports two modes:

  1. Newsstand mode (default)
  2. Standalone mode

Mode 1: Newsstand (default)

Out of the box, Baker 4.0 is configured to use Newsstand.

What you get with Newsstand mode:

  • You can publish new issues without having to submit your App for review again
  • You can get paid for issues through In-App Purchase
  • Your App is included in the special Newsstand folder
  • Your App's icon is automatically set to the cover of the most recently downloaded issue

To setup Baker in Newsstand mode with free issues/subscriptions, follow the Tutorial for Newsstand with Free issues.
To setup Baker in Newsstand mode with paid issues/subscriptions, follow the Tutorial for Newsstand with In App Purchase.

Mode 2: Standalone (without Newsstand)

If you don't want to use Newsstand, Baker 4.0 supports a Standalone mode with bundled publications.

What you get with Standalone mode:

  • You don't need a server to host your publications (your App will be self-contained)
  • You don't have to periodically publish new issues (as required by Newsstand)
  • You don't have to configure Newsstand in iTunes Connect
  • You have just one magazine or book to be releases (even paid for)

To setup Baker in Standalone mode, follow the Tutorial for Standalone App
