We have been inconsistent in our use of em dashes and double hyphens. @martindholmes and I noted that "There are 89 instances of double-hyphens in the TEI source files, some of which look like they would have to be retained (because they're part of some formal system such as a keyword taxonomy, or they're exemplifying how to create a comment), but most of which could be changed to em dashes. There are 317 instances of actual em dashes, so they are the majority."

With @martindholmes walking me through the process, I made three edits on the dev branch. I will continue this work in my own branch and update the style guide.

Not sure I see a need to be using a separate branch, here (except for practice).

I'm making a branch only because I need the practice.

I'm resuming @JanelleJenstad and @martindholmes's work on this ticket with @sydb's guidance. I have saved the changes directly to dev.

I have saved changes from double hyphens to em dashes to the following files within Source/Specs/*xml:

  • att.cmc.xml
auch von Beckerath gem. Literatur ?

--</view>

There were also some date ranges that had double hyphens instead of en dashes, so I have updated those instances accordingly within this ticket also (if there are objections, let me know and I can revert):

  • locusGrp.xml
<locus from="13" to="26">Bl. 13--26</locus>
<locus from="37" to="58">37--58</locus>
<locus from="82" to="96">82--96</locus>

Also, I changed double hyphens to em dashes in the following files within Source/Guidelines/en/*.xml:

  • BIB-Bibliography.xml
une introduction au codage des textes électroniques en vue de leur échange -- version de

  • CO-CoreElements.xml

And lastly, I changed the double hyphens to em dashes in the HD-Header.xml within Source/Guidelines/fr/*.xml

There are a few cases where the use of double hyphens or em-dash remains uncertain, among which the reference to the French version of La TEI simplifiée within Source/Guidelines/fr/BIB-Bibliography.xml:

<bibl xml:id="fr-ex-TEI-simpl" xml:lang="fr"><author>Burnard, Lou</author>,
          <author>Sperberg-McQueen, C. M.</author>, <title>
          <ref target="http://www.gutenberg.eu.org/publications/autres/TEILITE/">La TEI simplifiée,
une introduction au codage des textes électroniques en vue de leur échange -- version de
            travail </ref>
        </title>, <date>1996</date>.</bibl>

Pinging @lb42 : should de leur échange -- version de travail be a double hyphen -- or an em-dash ?
