I still like the old one (and would suggest the insider to use the same but green instead of blue), but the "simple" one looks nice to me, too. Maybe "totally different" between Insider and Release and use the simple for Insiders? Then possibly already now the insider one in green an keeping the purple for a possible switch? |

The aborted icon will be fine tho. Alternative version if we'd like to keep the roots. |

@paulcarroty I've look at the comments about the aborted logo. The main issues were about the lack of background and choice of color. So maybe, we can look into that. We need a way to alert the users a new logo might coming and we would like their comments. I will look how to do it. For the Insiders, for the time being, I will make a green variant of the current logo. |

The point was previously discussed - it would be good to patch the "new version welcome" page and add vscodium specific parts (and maybe also comment out or somehow mark MS proprietary-only extension news there). |

What exactly is the idea of the current icon? Is it a tree? (Non-ironically, I really couldn't figure it out yet) 🤔 The main problem I have with the current one is poor visibility on small sizes. Because the branching lines are so thin (proportionally to the entire area of the icon) and the background is a very bright color, it becomes hard to visually distinguish it at a glance from a "white blob with barely visible blue-ish scribbles" on the task bar / dock. More than once I have clicked on the wrong icon because of that (e.g. the Remmina client, which has an icon that also becomes a "white blob with barely visible blue-ish scribbles" on the task bar / dock). PS: it makes it hard, but not impossible to distinguish. Though, I feel like an icon that is hard to distinguish is also more "forgettable", and might hurt the exposure of the project to new users. |

I iterated over two ideas here, that I'd like to share. Keep in mind that everything from these proposals (shape, colors, effects, etc) is open to further changes and discussion, as I believe more iterations might improve and refine the ideas :) I'm also making these on SVG (Inkscape), so making changes is super easy and non-destructive, so feel free to request more variations. Simplified Shape:Pros:
Cons:
Derive from VS Code:This one also works as a variation of the Pros:

Simplified Shape:

Pros:
- Works as an evolution of the current icon, smoothing the transition
as the shape is familiar;
- Improves contrast and visibility on small sizes;
Cons:
- I'm not sure this can work *without* a background. Might need to use
shadows to add volume;
Derive from VS Code:
[image: codium-reverse-code]
<https://user-images.githubusercontent.com/16336981/198834608-6b01fd49-95bf-4104-ae83-da6ce12a07d8.png>
This one also works as a variation of the vscode-style, but experimenting
with an assimetric shape to add more depth / perspective.
Pros:
- Similar style of VS Code icon, different enough to be
distinguishable;
- The shape fills the area better, so it can work well without a
background;
Cons:
- The shape is generic enough that another project out there might
already have a similar icon. Tried googling and couldn't find, but this is
still a possibility;

Please, please change the icon. I really don't like it. And I don't have anything against icons usually. It just looks terrible in the windows taskbar. See what I mean and compare it to how the other icons look. The problem is the White Background and the tree-like stuff in the middle. Maybe it is the kind of thing that looks ok at much larger sizes but in a taskbar it is terrible. Try to go for something with less detail. the icon actually looks "weak" is how I would describe it and takes a while sometime to hunt around to find it compared to any other icon that is more "visually there". (clear & visible) |

Simplified shape (the seaweed) is really nice and distinct. Something that con work in the long run. The rest are a bit too generic imho. |

It seems that we have the vote result: simplified, Note @psergiojr: If shown in the taskbar with a small size, then the thick lines are too thick - they don't improve the view but lead to "color splash" again, maybe thicken "less"? Most people reacted to the yellow/green not that well, maybe a green one with the color of the comment button here would be better? @daiyam: Do you think we can ship this with the February version, or at least close the poll and drop the request in the vscodium start to take part? |

Github polls are limited so I had to split the vote into 2. One for the shape and a second one for the color. Is it good? |

Is it possible to let users choose the icon from their settings? I.e., allow them to choose from a set of options, to suite their preference? I love the original coral icon and it is actually a big part of why i stick with VSCodium ironically. Nature is a value to me. Others feel differently though. Rather than revisit the icon every year or two, could we just let users customize to their preference? (Such is the open source way 😉) |

I've updated the latest Insiders (https://github.com/VSCodium/vscodium-insiders/releases/tag/1.77.0.23078-insider) with the most voted shape (simplified) and the second most voted color (green). The script https://github.com/VSCodium/vscodium/blob/insider/icons/build_icons.sh has been updated so all icons are generated from 2 svgs (the logo, the logo with white border). PS: I've forgot to update some icons inside the editor itself, I will do it for the next revision. |

After latest update I was looking at the tool bar (screenshot below) and was struggling to understand where did VSCodium icon go... Until I realized that that 'indistinguishable' icon next to visual studio which might look like hieroglyph or whatever you may take it for is probably the "deer-VSCodium". Mind you that github shows (at least on my screen) the icons below larger (30-40%) than they actually appear on the screen, so, at the end felt happier finally understanding the icon is still there. Windows allows to change and select an icon shipped within the exe file. Thanks. |

I've been a long time user of VSCodium. I love what you guys are doing in general, but... I truly loathe with every fiber of my being the icon with white background on linux (and windows on the rare occasions I use it). It clashes with all the other icons on my bar and draws the attention in an annoying way. I thought the world was suddenly made right when several weeks ago I updated VSCodium to discover a new icon with no white BG, truly, the only way I could have been happier is if it was the transparent bg green icon from #313 (comment) (I ❤️❤️❤️ that one) I see I missed the time to vote and feedback, but I'm only seeing any of this now because of the icon change, much like the green icon controversy of years ago... All that said, is there a way to make the application icon a choice in the settings or is it hard-compiled into the app? If it is possible, I am willing to make a PR myself, but don't want to go down this rabbit hole if its not even possible. Anyone already familiar with the internals know if it would even be possible? Now, if you find yourself wondering...
This is one of several scripts I've previously used to run on a cron job just to replace the icon, but it would break randomly every few updates (i think either snap or flatpak issue) and so I finally just gave up. #!/bin/bash
# snap
cd /var/lib/snapd/desktop/applications/
ICON=VSCodium
WRONG_ICON=$(rg -i Icon=${ICON} -g 'codium*')
if [ -z "$WRONG_ICON" ]; then
sed -i "s+^Icon=.*+Icon=${ICON}+gI" /var/lib/snapd/desktop/applications/codium_url-handler.desktop
sed -i "s+^Icon=.*+Icon=${ICON}+gI" /var/lib/snapd/desktop/applications/codium_codium.desktop
fi
# flatpak
cd ~/.local/share/flatpak/exports/share/applications
ICON=VSCodium
WRONG_ICON=$(rg -i Icon=${ICON} -g 'codium*')
if [ -z "$WRONG_ICON" ]; then
sed -i "s+^Icon=.*+Icon=${ICON}+gI" ~/.local/share/flatpak/exports/share/applications/codium_url-handler.desktop
sed -i "s+^Icon=.*+Icon=${ICON}+gI" ~/.local/share/flatpak/exports/share/applications/codium_codium.desktop
fi 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻 🥺 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻So, to reiterate, Is there a way to make this a user setting and if a PR was made to make it a user setting, would it likely be accepted? Disclaimer: Not trying to give offense or hurt anyone's feelings. This is literally just my preference and I'm willing to put in the time to have it resolved... at least until the next logo change 😜 |

Hi, let's talk about icon...
I'm planning to release the Insiders version and I think it's time for the icon to evolve!
For a time, there were a new one (
aborted
) which was reverted.The
vscode-style
is interesting but it's too similar to VSCode. Maybe by opening theC
, it would be better.The
simple
is my take just to make something...Here some requirements:
@stripedpajamas @GitMensch @paulcarroty @cristianovitorino @hazarek, could you give your ideas or feedback? Thx
Edit: Feel free to make proposals for the icon.
Edit 2: Here the timeline:
Edit 3:
The votes are available at:
It ends the 1st April at midnight.
