LogGroups and LogStreams can now be exported and imported.

ALSO IN THIS COMMIT

  • All exports() for other resources would run afoul of
    ClassCastException in Java. Wrap all FnImportValues in the right
    type to avoid this.
  • The addition of some convenience methods to the Arn class flushed
    out a number of places where we were using some other Token-derived
    value in places where Arns were expected.

I am concerned about how error prone the exported types are... Any idea on how we can get the type checker to yell?

It's not just the exported types, it's everywhere we use a typed Token (like BucketName) but actually want to use an intrinsic. Java will always say "that's not the same class".

TypeScript will happily accept them because of the structural typing that it does (they all share the "resolve" method).

Here's a thing we could do: since all the subclasses of Token are generated, we put a unique member on each of the generated classes, maybe BucketName.bucketName (or goshdarnit BucketName.1a315361bd). Then they won't be structurally the same anymore.

I like the .bucketName option. Alternatively, we can just make everything a string and be done with tokens for intrinsic functions forever and ever, can't we?

Maybe. We'll also lose all benefits to type declarations, every Token-derivative can be interchanged with every other one. If we wanted to have that, is there a reason we have BucketName and QueueUrl and TopicArn classes today? Why not just declare everything as Token?

Also, it would super-violate the principle of least surprise for statically typed language users.

Strong typing is achieved in the AWS Construct Library by via the AWS Constructs (Bucket/BucketRef), not through their attributes. The reason we currently have strong types for attributes is an evolution from attempting to strengthen the typing of L1 before we had L2. Thinking about this now, when we have L2 and stringified tokens, I am not sure that there's actually value in these strong types anymore.
