It looks good to me! This handles better the situation on our side since we know that we received a password setting and we mask it in our logs.
However we should have in mind that when the Docker event arrives and is logged then the password will be displayed again in the container's labels.
I wonder if we should forbid this kind of configuration, by telling users they must explicitly use some reference to an env var, docker labels / kubernetes annotations are not well suited for storing password |
btw, they could input passwords already by using the |

Updated code to use common.DebugString
.
I think we are doing that here: https://github.com/elastic/beats/blob/master/metricbeat/docs/autodiscover-hints.asciidoc#coelasticmetricspassword. Were you thinking of some other way? |

Hm, it's a pitty to loose this debug string. The object is created dynamically. If something goes wrong in NewConfigFrom
one needs this debug output in order to tell what the input was.
MapStr has a few serialization methods: String, StringToPrint, and MarshalLogObject (used by zap loggers in case MapStr is passed directly). I wonder if we should: a) always apply the blacklist in these methods (there might be other places we write this debug string), or b) provide a special function/mapping serializing MapStr to a string.
We can also add a 'mixture' of a) and b) by implementing a fmt.Formatter
. E.g. if %v
or %s
is given we apply the blacklist. But if the +
or #
flag is passed we do not apply the blacklist. For MarshalLogObject
I would always prefer to apply the blacklist, as this is part of the logger.
@ycombinator @exekias WDYT?

I like this option the best.
@urso I've implemented your suggestion and done a bit of related minor cleanup as well. Please re-review when you get a chance. Thanks! |

* [Filebeat] Fixes for NetFlow v9 devices from various vendors (#15449) - Allow for zero scope fields in options template NetFlow v9 spec allows for options templates that contain no scope fields. The netflow input was treating this case as an error and discarding the template, but that is only applicable to IPFIX. - Use additional fields to populate bytes/pkt counters Some devices out there (Cisco NSEL) use fields 231/232 as bytes counters, when those are supposed to be layer 4 payload counters. This updates the ECS fields populator to use those fields when the expected ones are not found. - Support a classId of 32 bits While the spec mandates a classId of 8 bits, some Cisco ASA devices actually use a 32 bit version of this field. This patches the field to allow up to 32-bit integers and updates the index pattern to use `long` for the `netflow.class_id` field. - Add more fields from v9 Cisco devices Fixes #14212 * update settings for `decode_csv_fields` (#15249) (#15550) Co-authored-by: DeDe Morton <dede.morton@elastic.co> Co-authored-by: Sophia Xu <sophia.xu@elastic.co> * docs: updates to output config (#15272) * [Filebeat] Handle error message in handleS3Objects function (#15545) * Handle error message in handleS3Objects function * remove s3Context.Fail and use setError and done instead * Add changelog * Fix use of wrong fields in Cisco ASA dashboard (#15553) This dashboard wasn't updated after a couple of fields were renamed. Fixes: #15420 * Add test for publisher spool encode and decode. (#15534) * Add test for publisher queue encode and decode. * Run mage fmt. * Fixes from code review. * Fix convert processor conversion of string with leading zeros to integer (#15557) The conversion failed when for strings with leading zeroes and a decimal digit 8 or 9, as the underlying runtime function would try to parse that as an octal number. This is fixed by only allowing decimal and hex, which in turns makes the processor more aligned to its Elasticsearch counterpart. Fixes #15513 * New mage target: generate pkg file to test the manager (#15580) This PR adds a new mage target to Functionbeat named `buildPkgForFunction`. @ycombinator sorry to bother you here, docs says
How exactly it works? How do you distinguish if that ENV variable and not a password? Should this ENV variable has to be defined in metricbeat environment or observed docker container environment? Should it be denoted somehow so system knows it's an ENV reference? I've added the following label to my container:

@ChrsMark thank you! This can be a valuable addition to the docs :) Unfortunately (fortunately?) I'm using Nomad/Vault/Consul instead of k8s so I cannot provide any feedback on k8s secrets. |
* [Filebeat] Fixes for NetFlow v9 devices from various vendors (elastic#15449) - Allow for zero scope fields in options template NetFlow v9 spec allows for options templates that contain no scope fields. - Add more fields from v9 Cisco devices Fixes elastic#14212 * update settings for `decode_csv_fields` (elastic#15249) (elastic#15550) Co-authored-by: DeDe Morton <dede.morton@elastic.co> Co-authored-by: Sophia Xu <sophia.xu@elastic.co> * docs: updates to output config (elastic#15272) * [Filebeat] Handle error message in handleS3Objects function (elastic#15545) * Handle error message in handleS3Objects function * remove s3Context.Fail and use setError and done instead * Add changelog * Fix use of wrong fields in Cisco ASA dashboard (elastic#15553) This dashboard wasn't updated after a couple of fields were renamed. Fixes elastic#15513 * New mage target: generate pkg file to test the manager (elastic#15580) This PR adds a new mage target to Functionbeat named `buildPkgForFunction`. This prevents pointing aliases to those fields, which we need in 7.6+. Setting those fields to `keyword` explicitly so that they are included in the template. Follow up to #15349.
With this PR any string representations of a Metricbeat module configuration constructed by autodiscovery will mask the password. For instance, this will prevent the password from being output verbatim in Metricbeat logs.
Manual Testing
Start metricbeat with log enabled:
./metricbeat -e -d "hints.builder"
docker run -l co.elastic.metrics/module=nats -l co.elastic.metrics/username=user42 -l co.elastic.metrics/password=SUPERSECRET --name nats nats
Check in Metricbeat logs for :
Specifically make sure the
password
field is masked in the generated config that's emitted in the log.
