When chatting you can start typing a contact's nickname:
da [tab]
dann

as in: chatt
And the cursor is at the end of the nickname so in order to actually send a message you need to start with a space. I think that space should already by there.

Agreed, I'm struggling with this, too. The IRC clients I've used before (irssi, xchat and thunderbird) usually also add a colon or a coma after the nick, too.

So if you type da[tab], it gets expanded to dann:[space] or dann,[space].

I'd favor the comma more than colon.

I suggested this back on #172 so hopefully this issue brings attention to it.

Hey guys!

Lots of people have requested this feature. While I personally think it's a really minor issue, I'll go ahead and add this to the settings so that you guys may decide this by yourself.

I'll ping this thread when it's done.

Wouldn't making this into a setting be the best method? Anyone can choose how they want it, whether a space, a comma and space, comma and colon, or nothing.
