33. EEG fMRI acquisition: MRI control

Fa-Hsuan Lin edited this page Nov 11, 2022 · 2 revisions

These are procedures for controlling the MRI console in concurrent EEG-fMRI acquisition using temporally sparse SMS-InI for fMRI and continuous EEG recording.

Here is the cheat sheet:

0. Preparation

Enable Advanced User mode at the console

1. Prepare PMU

1.1 At terminal, run IDEACmdTool

1.2 select "PMU control"

1.3 select "PMU signal logging"

1.4 press "12" for "StartHostLogAll".

At this moment, you will be prompted for the file prefix of PMU files. Typically we use eegfmri_wm_s001_run1 for an experiment "wm" with subject "s001" in run number 1.

WARNING: DO NOT PRESS "Enter" yet!!.

2. Prepare SMS-InI reference scan

2.1 Fix FOV

2.2 Confirm selected coil elements are "HC1-7" when a 64-channel head coil array is used.

2.3 Choose the "Adjustment" in the Options menu at the console. This is for manual shimming.

2.4 At the "Frequency" tab, click "GO" (not "Apply") to start the resonance frequency checking.

2.5 At the "3D shim" tab, click "measure" button to start the field mapping.

2.6 At the "3D shim" tab, check the phase maps after field mapping. A homogeneous field will be single-color field maps. If you get rainbow color field maps, the shimming is not done.

2.7 At the "3D shim" tab, click "calculate" button to calculate the new shimming current settings.

2.8 At the "3D shim" tab, click the lower "apply" button to use the new shimming current settings.

2.9 Repeat ###2.5 to ### 2.8 until a homogeneous field is achieved.

2.10 Close the adjustment window

2.11 "Apply" the protocol. Now a window will pop up to start the reference scan. WARNING: DO NOT "Continue yet!".

3. Prepare SMS-InI acceleration scan

3.1 Copy the FOV and shimming region set in the reference scan.

3.2 Confirm selected coil elements are "HC1-7" when a 64-channel head coil array is used.

3.3 "Apply" the protocol

4. Prepare EPI scan

4.1 Copy the FOV and shimming region set in the reference scan.

4.2 Confirm selected coil elements are "HC1-7" when a 64-channel head coil array is used.

4.3 "Apply" the protocol

5. Start E-prime

6. Start SMS-InI reference scan

Click "Continue" to actually start the SMS-InI reference scan. By the end of SMS-InI reference scan, you will be paused here.

7. Start EEG recording and PMU recording

Click "Enter" at the PMU window (check step ##1.4) to start PMU recording.

8. Start SMS-InI acceleration scan

During SMS-InI acceleration scan, check the PMU status by visualizing "ECG I" and "PULSE".

By the end of SMS-InI acceleration scan, log the raw data file at TWIX and check the file size.

9. Stop PMU recording

press "13" for "StopHostLogAll". Six files (.ext, .ext2, .pmu, .ecg, .puls, and .resp) should be created at C:\Medcom\log.

10. Stop EEG recording

11. Start EPI scan
