If you hit an ERR_OSSL_EVP_UNSUPPORTED error in your application with Node.js 17, it’s likely that your application or a module you’re using is attempting to use an algorithm or key size which is no longer allowed by default with OpenSSL 3.0. A new command-line option, --openssl-legacy-provider, has been added to revert to the legacy provider as a temporary workaround for these tightened restrictions.

Bug report: facebook/create-react-app#11562

While we seem to be a bit behind on react-scripts versions (why does dependabot not offer an update there? Did it only do security updates in the first run?), updating to the latest version wouldn't fix it yet. There is a PR open to update the webpack dependency in react-scripts which needs to be merged and released first: facebook/create-react-app#11597

In the meantime, we could either add this --openssl-legacy-provider option workaround, but a user reoprted that this would break Node 16 installations, and I'd like to keep backwards compatibility to at least that one (it's the newest big LTS release).

We could set the environment variable in the Dockerfile, but for now I'd prefer to stay on Node 16 instead. Node 17 is still pretty young, there could be other hidden bugs as well. Let's give projects some time to update.
