PlayStation 2 Linux runs R5900 executables and, under certain restrictions described by the R5900 processor specific ABI (psABI), also generic MIPS I, MIPS II and MIPS III executables.

Building and installing

The recommended steps to building and installing Linux for the PlayStation 2 are:

  1. building an R5900 cross compiler;
  2. building PlayStation 2 IOP modules;
  3. building an R5900 Busybox;
  4. building a PlayStation 2 Linux INITRAMFS root filesystem;
  5. building a PlayStation 2 Linux kernel;
  6. building programs for PlayStation 2 Linux;
  7. installing PlayStation 2 Linux.

In addition, Gentoo Linux for the PlayStation 2 can be built for a complete operating system.
