Good and smart engineering helps more. Don’t try to blindly save on tools that help your team.

Writing will be what you will do most in the remote reality we have now. Go for a written culture that is better to keep up at different timezones.

I try to stick to the to the following and it is a constant exercise to keep in line (hence this ebook being a git project with reviews):

##### Use less than 30 words per sentence
Long sentences are hard to break and digest. Keep them short so the reader or listener can take it home and use it.

##### Avoid long recaps
Time is short. It is tempting to give out a lot of context but make a clear judgement if that's needed. If so, write them down, send in advance and ask for the audience to be prepared if there is a presentation coming.

##### Drop adjectives, go for data
"Huge amazing rocketship !" can pass excitement but prefer "We grew 10% month over month in the last 6 months". Leave the adjectives for the audience or reader.

##### Eliminate weasel words
This is about doublespeak/corporate talk or uncertainty. Either you want something done, communicated or planned. It is important to know what you want and do it. If you go around too much the message will be buried and trust will go away.

##### The "so what" test
Drop the ego when reading your paper or deck and ask "does it matter ? should I extend it ? shorten it ?". What's the value ? It may help kill a meeting that could be an informative email. Does people really care about an algorithm in a finance meeting ? Remember time is short, work on the message.

If you get a question, reply with "Yes", "No", A number or "I don't know, will follow up". Or any equivalent. Drop the storytelling

I am not a native English speaker so writing was hard for a while. [The book On Writing Well](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0090RVGW0/ref=dp-kindle-redirect?_encoding=UTF8&btkr=1) helped me a lot. It was written before electronic communication but contains good advice and exercises. Work on it, communicating well is required.
