I feel like this is a dupe, but companies who are patrons need to be able to turn off receiving tips. The account of giving is going to be complicated enough, we don't need to add even more headache.

I mentioned this on #850 but only in passing.

So this is what it looks like right now.

  • Just to confirm, does this prevent me from tipping the participant who set this option? The use of the word "politely" makes me unsure if this is a hard restriction or just a polite request.
  • Is there an example Gittip participant who has this option turned on? Edit: Found one. https://www.gittip.com/heroku/ Based on that it, it seems I'm unable to tip, so it is a hard restriction.
  • If I'm receiving some times from people, and I set my status to "politely decline" for a moment, what happens to all the people who were tipping me? Are their weekly tipping amounts cancelled?
  • It's acceptable for companies who are patrons to decline gifts. I have a problem with individual humans locking me out of tipping them, though. One of the big uses of Gittip for me is to be able to support various people/projects/efforts; it's very painful when I can't because they're either not on Gittip yet or they use new option. IMO it'd be better if it were available for company patrons only (i.e. the "we are..." option). How do others feel about this issue?

Good questions.

  • Yes, it's a hard restriction.
  • Tips are not cancelled, no. See further comment on modify payday to not process gifts to participants with goal < 0 #916.
  • See opt out of receiving tips #114 for the last go-round on this topic. There are definitely those that are interested in giving on Gittip but not receiving. Either we allow them onto Gittip and give them the option, or we accept that those who aren't comfortable with this won't join at all, as @jeresig points out. This is similar to the option to give anonymously, which about 20% of givers currently utilize. I would rather have them on the site than not, I think.
