Sending ZIM files to another device

The Kiwix android app now allows you to send ZIM files directly to any other device. It does so using the Wifi Direct module of your android smartphone, and so doesn't require a data-connection for the transfer.

Steps for sending ZIM files:

On receiver device:

  1. Navigate to the 'Library' screen and go to the 'Device' tab in it.

  2. Tap on the 'Get content from nearby device' icon:

  1. Wait until the other device has completed step 3 of instructions for sender devices and reached the same screen. Then proceed to the next step.

  2. Tap on search icon to locate the other device (& grant the permissions requested if any). (Note that only the sender device shows list of files to be transferred before connection is completed).

  1. Wait for the sender to select your device as destination and start file transfer

  2. File transfer progress is displayed

  1. The zim-sharing screen closes once file transfer is complete

On sender device:

  1. In the 'Device' tab of the 'Library' screen, select all the zim files that you want to send to the receiver device.

  2. Once files have been selected, tap on the share icon on top-right corner of the screen:

  1. Tap on 'Send to nearby device' icon

That opens the following screen (same as the 'Get content from nearby device' screen on receiver device, except with list of files to be transferred):

  1. Tap on search icon to locate the other device (& grant the permissions requested if any). (Note that only the sender device shows list of files to be transferred before connection is completed).

  1. Tap on the name of the destination device

  2. Confirm receiver device

  1. File transfer progress is displayed

  1. The zim-sharing screen closes once file transfer is complete
