I can't find anything definitive from our sig meeting notes about whether we decided to call self hosting alpha or beta in 1.8.

We decided that this is alpha

Fixed, thanks. I'm happy we decided that.

I couldn't remember either but found https://github.com/kubernetes/kubernetes/blob/8163d147ec666cea006872f5ff6a65b4f9f5b542/cmd/kubeadm/app/features/features.go#L29. We should probably fix that comment.

## Self-hosting the Kubernetes control plane {#self-hosting}
As of 1.8, kubeadm can experimentally create a _self-hosted_ Kubernetes control
plane. This means that key components such as the API server, controller
manager, and scheduler run as normal pods instead of static pods.

I took a shot at elaborating a little here.

Self-hosting is beta in kubeadm 1.8 and is expected to become the default in
kubeadm 1.9. To create a self-hosted cluster, pass the
`--feature-gates=SelfHosting=true` to `kubeadm init`.

Tell the user about the Limitations (don't reboot 😄)
Can also tell a bit more about the actual process described in https://github.com/kubernetes/kubeadm/blob/master/docs/design/design_v1.8.md

Basically LGTM, only some nits.

@mattmoyer Only docs PR left after this is one that updates the generic getting started guide... At least, please go through it and see if any changes should be made there.

#### Caveats
Kubeadm self-hosting in 1.8 has some important limitations. In particular, a
self-hosted cluster cannot currently recover from a simultaneous reboot of all

of any master node. No matter how many of them you have, the one you reboot won't come back ;)
Also we shouldn't imply that we support more than one master node as other caveats take place then

Ah, I see. I guess because the master node's kubelet is configured to talk to the localhost host port so it won't even come back online if you did manually set up multiple masters. I'll clarify.

Do we have any ideas for a manual procedure to recover a cluster in this state?

volumes. Except for initial creation, these credentials are not managed by
kubeadm. You can use `--feature-gates=StoreCertsInSecrets=true` to enable an
experimental mode where control plane credentials are loaded from Secrets
instead. This may or may not be appropriate for your environment.

In summary, `kubeadm init --feature-gates=SelfHosting=true` works as follows:

1. Kubeadm creates static pod YAML files in `/etc/kubernetes/manifests/`.

* Minor fixes to kubeadm 1.8 upgrade guide. (#5678)

- The kubelet upgrade instructions should be done on every host, not
  just worker nodes.
- We should just upgrade all packages, instead of calling out kubelet
specifically. This will also upgrade kubectl, kubeadm, and
  kubernetes-cni, if installed.
- Draining nodes should also ignore daemonsets, and master errors can be
  ignored.
- Make sure that the new kubeadm download is chmoded correctly.
- Add a step to run `kubeadm version` to verify after downloading.
- Manually approve new kubelet CSRs if rotation is enabled (known issue).
