When compiled with a C99 compiler the implicit declaration would cause further errors. By proactively declaring it, we ensure the prototype matches with its uses.
When building under MacOS, toupper would go undeclared.

Under MacOS Monterrey/Xcode 14.0.1, the current state of
masterfails to build. With those simple tweaks, it builds again.Hope to see the professor at any of the retro events again! :)
