Nice work all on napari/napari.github.io#170! I only noticed it now but just wanted to suggest changing the "brands" of things at the bottom to verbs/actions, which are more accessible to newcomers that might not know what "image.sc" or "Zulip" are. Suggestions:

  • naparihub -> (Browse) Plugins
  • github -> Code
  • twitter -> Tweet
  • image.sc -> Ask
  • zulip -> Chat

This is a good idea. I think we could have longer than single word phrases, for improved clarity:

  • ask -> ask a question
  • chat -> community chat

Browse plugins is better than just "Plugins", for sure. It's much clearer what you're actually going to do with naparihub.

I don't know that "tweet" is more understandable than "twitter", they seem about the same to me. As long as the twitter logo is nearby I'm sure you could write anything you liked, though 😄

Well, in the screenshots in napari/napari.github.io#170, on the phone screen size, there's really not much room for more than one word. I'll let the designers deal with this one. 😊

I'm not sure if the new youtube channel will also be listed in the footer (and/or wherever else we link to social media). Link: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCbTgw84ew4pxTJ9qu3W2hqg/playlists

I can work on a design to accommodate the links to overflow beyond just one line, then we can be as flexible as we want with the phrasing.

@jni What do you think of maintaining the icons for each link (e.g. including the image.sc link with "Ask a question")? I think this could add some clarity for where users can expect to be taken, especailly if they are familiar with image.sc in this case, and even if not, they'd likely better understand that it is an external link.

For the youtube link, I can add that to mockups as well. Would it be something like "Watch tutorials" or is "tutorials" too specific?

Oh yeah I like the icons! Please keep them!

Yeah, tutorials is too specific, but I don't have a better "something" for "Watch [something]". Just "Watch"? I dunno. 🤷

Might be worth putting (some) of these icons at the top, ala pydata-sphinx docs:

The footer doesn't show until you scroll all the way down.

Yes and we should add a mastodon link! (I refuse to use the X logo, though. Happy to have a classic look with the bird. 😃)

Does this look like what you folks have in mind? I kept the original labels in tooltips, just in case.

I did not notice before, but the recent pydata sphinx theme versions had
unset our footer. I will send a PR later to fix the 0.5.0 docs in
napari.github.io, but this fixes the immediate issues and changes the
wording on the footer items as requested in #12 .
