A deadlock with this stacktrace was observed. The loop thread does a GFP_KERNEL allocation, it calls into dm-bufio shrinker and the shrinker depends on I/O completion in the dm-bufio subsystem. In order to fix the deadlock (and other similar ones), we set the flag PF_MEMALLOC_NOIO at loop thread entry. Revert the commit bd293d0. The proper fix has been made available with commit d0a255e ("loop: set PF_MEMALLOC_NOIO for the worker thread"). Note that the fix offered by commit bd293d0 doesn't really prevent the deadlock from occuring - if we look at the stacktrace reported by Junxiao Bi, we see that it hangs in bit_wait_io and not on the mutex - i.e. it has already successfully taken the mutex. Changing the mutex from mutex_lock to mutex_trylock won't help with deadlocks that happen afterwards. I/O requests may be held in scheduler queue because of resource contention. The starvation scenario was handled properly in the regular completion path but we failed to account for it during I/O submission. This lead to the hang captured below. Make sure we run the queue when resource contention is encountered in the submission path. Sorry, I missed this one. It actually looks ok to me, but could you sent it via the kernel mailing list? I usually only track patches via mail.

I got several memory leak reports from Asan with a simple command. It was because VDSO is not released due to the refcount. The following deadlock is detected: truncate -> setattr path is waiting for pending direct IO to be done (inode->i_dio_count become zero) with inode->i_rwsem held (down_write). The same deadlock was mentioned in upstream commit 28f5a8a ("ocfs2: should wait dio before inode lock in ocfs2_setattr()"). It seems that that commit only removed the cluster lock (the victim of above dead lock) from the ABBA deadlock party. End-user visible effects: Process hang in truncate -> ocfs2_setattr path and other processes hang at ocfs2_dio_end_io_write path. This is to fix the deadlock itself. It removes inode_lock() call from dio completion path to remove the deadlock and add ip_alloc_sem lock in setattr path to synchronize the inode modifications. The inode switching code is not suited for dax inodes. Hi all,
this patch proposes to use the device tree to determine the present cpus instead of assuming all
CONFIG_NRCPUS
are actually present in the system.I often use my simulator to test uni-processor, dual- and quad-core systems, and this change would allow me to reuse the same vmlinux image for all of them and just swap out the (separate) device trees. With the current system, each core up to
CONFIG_NRCPUS
that is not actually present causes a 1 second delay during boot.
