To be honest I don't like this solution. Perhaps pytest-cov should just handle this particular scenario by default instead of asking users to make arcane configuration (it's already arcane enough as it is). Eg: do tox env name suffixing by default. |

Ok so I'm thinking now that maybe making pytest-cov override the coverage file name would me more trouble than it's worth (like breaking existing configurations and usecases). Maybe we need to have your changes in the examples after all ... Any particular reason the cleanup env was removed? |

tox -e pyXXdoes not run the envs that pyXX depends on [src]. This means that with the current example configs, runningtox -e pyXXwill not runcoverage cleanand sopytest-covdata will be appended to the preexisting.coveragefile.IMO, appending to the existing coverage data is not the expected behavior when running a single test suite against one Python version.
In fact, the current behavior can even cause decreased coverage to go undetected. E.g.:
toxand generates a.coveragefile that reports 100% coverage.tox -e py38.With the current example configs,
tox -e py38will report 100% coverage despite coverage really being lower. The user would have to runtoxin full to discover the decreased coverage.Related: #416
