Default number of threads seem to be equal to num physical cores, not logical cores #2269
Comments
It looks like this is because we call tokio/tokio/src/loom/std/mod.rs Lines 74 to 76 in e35038e
I believe this code was written by @carllerche — Carl, is there any motivation for using the number of physical rather than logical cores here? |

Some reasons to prefer logical count as the default: - Chips reporting many logical CPUs vs physical, such as via hyperthreading, probably know better than us about the workload the CPUs can handle. - The logical count (`num_cpus::get()`) takes into consideration schedular affinity, and cgroups CPU quota, in case the user wants to limit the amount of CPUs a process can use. Closes #2269

Summary: We are using older version of tokio which spawns as many threads as we have physical cores instead of the number of logical cores. It was fixed in tokio-rs/tokio#2269 but we can't use it yet because we are waiting for another fix to be released - rust-lang/futures-rs#2154. For now let's hardcode it in mononoke Reviewed By: krallin Differential Revision: D23599140 fbshipit-source-id: 80685651a7a29ba8938d9aa59770f191f7c42b8b

I tried running my app with default
Runtime::new
on c5.2xlarge AWS machine. This machine has 8 logical and 4 physical cores.By default it seem
Runtime::new
in this case creates runtime with 4 threads.Is this intentional? Should it be using num of logical cores instead and create 8 threads?
I understand that I can always override this with
Builder
, however I wonder whether using num of physical cores is a good default. I would imagine with this default, most of users with hyper-threading processors will end up using 50% of CPU at bestprocessor : 1
