Commit 5803ed2 ("mm: mark all calls into the vmalloc subsystem as potentially sleeping") added might_sleep() to remove_vm_area() from vfree(), and commit 763b218 ("mm: add preempt points into __purge_vmap_area_lazy()") actually made vfree() potentially sleeping on non-preemptible kernels. commit bf22e37 ("mm: add vfree_atomic()") commit 0f110a9 ("kernel/fork: use vfree_atomic() to free thread stack") commit 8d5341a ("x86/ldt: use vfree_atomic() to free ldt entries") commit 5803ed2 ("mm: mark all calls into the vmalloc subsystem as potentially sleeping") commit f9e0997 ("mm: turn vmap_purge_lock into a mutex") commit 763b218 ("mm: add preempt points into __purge_vmap_area_lazy()") But these commits did not take appropriate precautions for changing non-sleeping API to sleeping API. Only two callers are updated to use non-sleeping version, and remaining callers are silently using sleeping version which might cause problems. For example, if we try ---------- void kvfree(const void *addr) { + /* Detect errors before kvmalloc() falls back to vmalloc(). */ + if (addr) { + WARN_ON(in_nmi()); + if (likely(!in_interrupt())) + might_sleep(); + } if (is_vmalloc_addr(addr)) vfree(addr); else ---------- change, we can find a caller who is calling kvfree() with a spinlock held. At least it is not doable for 4.10-stable and 4.11-rc fixes. Therefore, we must choose from either reverting these commits or keeping vfree() as non-sleeping API for 4.10-stable and 4.11. I assume that the latter is less painful for future development. This patch updates the condition to use __vfree_deferred() in order to make sure that all vfree()/kvfree() users who did not notice these commits will remain safe. console_unlock() is a function which is prepared for being called from non-schedulable context (e.g. spinlock held, inside RCU). It is using !oops_in_progress && preemptible() && !rcu_preempt_depth() as a condition for whether it is safe to schedule. This patch uses that condition with oops_in_progress check (which is not important for __vunmap() case) removed. Straightforward change will be - if (unlikely(in_interrupt())) + if (unlikely(in_interrupt() || !(preemptible() && !rcu_preempt_depth()))) in vfree(). But we can remove in_interrupt() check due to reasons below. If CONFIG_PREEMPT_COUNT=y, in_interrupt() and preemptible() are defined as #define in_interrupt() (irq_count()) #define irq_count() (preempt_count() & (HARDIRQ_MASK | SOFTIRQ_MASK | NMI_MASK)) #define preemptible() (preempt_count() == 0 && !irqs_disabled()) and therefore this condition can be rewritten as below. - if (unlikely(in_interrupt() || !(preemptible() && !rcu_preempt_depth()))) + if (unlikely((preempt_count() & (HARDIRQ_MASK | SOFTIRQ_MASK | NMI_MASK)) || + !(preempt_count() == 0 && !irqs_disabled()) || rcu_preempt_depth())) - if (unlikely((preempt_count() & (HARDIRQ_MASK | SOFTIRQ_MASK | NMI_MASK)) || - !(preempt_count() == 0 && !irqs_disabled()) || rcu_preempt_depth())) + if (unlikely((preempt_count() & (HARDIRQ_MASK | SOFTIRQ_MASK | NMI_MASK)) || + (preempt_count() != 0 || irqs_disabled()) || rcu_preempt_depth())) - if (unlikely((preempt_count() & (HARDIRQ_MASK | SOFTIRQ_MASK | NMI_MASK)) || - (preempt_count() != 0 || irqs_disabled()) || rcu_preempt_depth())) + if (unlikely((preempt_count() & (HARDIRQ_MASK | SOFTIRQ_MASK | NMI_MASK)) || + preempt_count() != 0 || irqs_disabled() || rcu_preempt_depth())) - if (unlikely((preempt_count() & (HARDIRQ_MASK | SOFTIRQ_MASK | NMI_MASK)) || - preempt_count() != 0 || irqs_disabled() || rcu_preempt_depth())) + if (unlikely(preempt_count() != 0 || irqs_disabled() || rcu_preempt_depth())) - if (unlikely(preempt_count() != 0 || irqs_disabled() || rcu_preempt_depth())) + if (unlikely(!(preempt_count() == 0 && !irqs_disabled()) || rcu_preempt_depth())) - if (unlikely(!(preempt_count() == 0 && !irqs_disabled()) || rcu_preempt_depth())) + if (unlikely(!preemptible() || rcu_preempt_depth())) If CONFIG_PREEMPT_COUNT=n, preemptible() is defined as #define preemptible() 0 and therefore this condition can be rewritten as below. - if (unlikely(in_interrupt() || !(preemptible() && !rcu_preempt_depth()))) + if (unlikely(in_interrupt() || !(0 && !rcu_preempt_depth()))) - if (unlikely(in_interrupt() || !(0 && !rcu_preempt_depth()))) + if (unlikely(in_interrupt() || !(0))) - if (unlikely(in_interrupt() || !(0))) + if (unlikely(in_interrupt() || 1)) - if (unlikely(in_interrupt() || 1)) + if (unlikely(1)) Also drop unlikely() part because caller being inside non-schedulable context is not such uncommon cases. commit 082f230 upstream. Local random address needs to be updated before creating connection if RPA from LE Direct Advertising Report was resolved in host. Otherwise remote device might ignore connection request due to address mismatch. phylink_ethtool_ksettings_get can be called while the interface may not even be up, which should not be a problem. But there are drivers (e.g. gianfar) which connect to the PHY in .ndo_open and disconnect in .ndo_close. While odd, to my knowledge this is again not illegal and there may be more that do the same. But PHYLINK for example has this check in phylink_ethtool_ksettings_get: if (pl->phydev) { phy_ethtool_ksettings_get(pl->phydev, kset); } else { kset->base.port = pl->link_port; } So it will not populate kset->base.speed if there is no PHY connected. The speed will be 0, by way of a previous memset. Not SPEED_UNKNOWN. It is arguable whether that is legal or not. include/uapi/linux/ethtool.h says: All values 0 to INT_MAX are legal. By that measure it may be. But it sure would make users of the __ethtool_get_link_ksettings API need make more complicated checks (against -1, against 0, 1, etc). So far the kernel community has been ok with just checking for SPEED_UNKNOWN. Take net/sched/sch_taprio.c for example. The check in taprio_set_picos_per_byte is currently not robust enough and will trigger this division by zero, due to PHYLINK not setting SPEED_UNKNOWN: if (!__ethtool_get_link_ksettings(dev, &ecmd) && ecmd.base.speed != SPEED_UNKNOWN) picos_per_byte = div64_s64(NSEC_PER_SEC * 1000LL * 8, ecmd.base.speed * 1000 * 1000); [ 27.109992] Division by zero in kernel. So, it seems that taprio is not following the API... I'd suggest either fixing taprio, or getting agreement to change the ethtool API. The chosen path was to fix taprio.
