The problem is probably not so much the existence of the file as the permissions on it -- even if we create a zero-byte file in the VuFind directory, if it isn't given Apache ownership, it still won't work right. I've added a note about permissions to config.ini, and also changed the default path to /var/log/vufind.log, since that is probably a more logical place for the logs on most Linux systems. This corrects a problem with new VuFind users being created from a Shibboleth login. messages.log is not created by default, which when you enable logging, without having the file it causes VuFind to stop working until the file is created and the service is restarted.
