This PR introduces a new proving orhestration system enabling a block to be proven concurrently with simulation. It also creates the prover-client package and moves some of the proving functionality to this package from sequencer-client.

Benchmark results

Metrics with a significant change:

  • circuit_simulation_time_in_ms (base-parity): 4,413 (+142%)
  • circuit_simulation_time_in_ms (base-rollup): 18,069 (+2459%)
Detailed results

All benchmarks are run on txs on the Benchmarking contract on the repository. Each tx consists of a batch call to create_note and increment_balance, which guarantees that each tx has a private call, a nested private call, a public call, and a nested public call, as well as an emitted private note, an unencrypted log, and public storage read and write.

This benchmark source data is available in JSON format on S3 here.

Values are compared against data from master at commit 8434d2f3 and shown if the difference exceeds 1%.

Is the idea to change this later to a call to the actual prover, or to not return a proof here and do it elsewhere?

Yes, eventually all proving inside sequencer will be gone.

I understand these are all copied directly from the old solo-block-builder, right? Any significant changes worth reviewing?

I think the ProvingOrchestrator depends heavily on being called sequentially. If, for some reason, the building of two blocks overlaps, then the 2nd block will get txs meant for the 1st one.

Maybe we should move the ProvingState to the ProvingTicket, and have clients call addNewTx on the ProvingTicket itself, to make sure txs from different blocks don't get mixed up? Though I'm not sure if that'd break the stateIdentifier check.

Possible alternative is to have the ProvingOrchestrator hang on to ticket, and have startNewBlock reject if the ticket's promise has not fulfilled.

ProvingOrchestrator is dependent on being called sequentially. You wouldn't be able to build more than 1 block at a time as it would corrupt the MerkleTrees.

Let's use something different from 0 and 1 to be more explicit, it took me a while to understand why this return 0.

I looked around for alternative implementations to a promise pool so we didn't have to manually check the state of each promise, and found this approach which feels cleaner: they wrap each promise into a promise that returns itself, so it can be removed from the set when it finishes.

I'm having a hard time following the flow here: who takes care of retrying this once the root parity inputs are ready?

Which base parity circuit finishes last and completes the set of inputs to the root circuit will kick off the root parity circuit.

I'm really unsure about the interface between orchestrator and provingstate.

It feels to me as though they are 1-1: we don't really want people calling startNewBlock while there is unfinished state,
plus this class makes use of intimate knowledge of the internals of provingstate (e.g. storeMergeInputs below).

I think we'll slowly clean up the interfaces between the various internal pieces, and I have a healthy fear of the processing queue that will be assuaged with stress tests.

Broadly, I think it's a great improvement in way we orchestrate proving.
