FireGear is the FirePick repository for 3D-printed (3DP) gears shared by multiple FirePick projects. The gears are organized into collections that work together:
Herringbone gears are familiar to anyone with a 3D printer, since they are used in the 3DP extruders to drive the hobbed bolt. Herringbone gears are self-aligning, which makes them ideal for transferring power between 3DP plastic parts that can wear and flex. They also minimize backlash on changes of direction.
Triangular herringbone gears are not involute, which makes them noisy and inefficient in comparison with involute gears. However, it is much easier to design and customize triangular gears with minimal effort.
The H20 gear family is based on a triangular tooth with a gear module of 1. H20 gears have dimensions suited for use with:
- standard 20mm extrusions
- NEMA 14 or NEMA 17 motors
- M5 drive shafts
- M5 or M8 load shafts
FireGear will eventually include involute gears that can be used to replace H20 gear combinations with their involute counterparts.
