Initial edited draft.

My close friend is a writer / copy-editor and graciously agreed to do an editing pass over my first draft.

I don't know if this is a good idea and if it fits into this post but we could also mention that one step to make our community more welcoming and comfortable was estabilishing a Code of Conduct in 2016.

They encourage "anyone who faces under-representation, systemic bias, or discrimination in the technology industry of their country" to apply.

Our goal is that this Outreachy intern will be the first of an increasing number of valued contributors from underserved communities that will help us be a healthier, more sustainable open source project.
With your help, we intend to continue the internship process semiannually for at least 5 cycles and at that time assess if we should continue with the program or if our diversification efforts would be better served with a new approach.

I don't understand why we would stop doing this?

Let's try it first and evaluate.
Who knows, maybe there are / will be projects that are better in some regard. For example the same concept on a global scale.
If it works out well we simply continue.

Btw, that's also the reason I'd rather omit "for at least 5 cycles".

One of the asks I've seen from POC is that white people commit to specific and ongoing efforts to fight racism, which is why I think setting a number is important, although it could certainly be smaller than 5. Goal setting also increases accountability.

I added the opportunity to reevaluate since it's entirely possible a different program that is even more suited to the Mixxx community will be available in the future.

"as long as the community keeps funding it" is specific and ongoing.

but maybe we should set a fundraising goal for more than one round?

## Diversifying Recruiting

In our discussions, we quickly noted that the Mixxx contributor base is largely white, male, and either from the US or Western Europe.

I propose adding something along the lines of:
This is ironic considering that the art, techniques, and culture of DJing were pioneered by people of color.

While I agree with adding the sentence Be proposed, I'd like to use something other than "pioneered" because of the possible brand association many DJs might draw, possibly causing a subconscious positive image of PioneerDJ.

I could just be inventing this out of thin air though and instantly associating pioneerdj with the word pioneering is just a phenomenon that doesn't occur with other readers. Or the possible association is not a problem at all...

I'm not so thrilled about the wording of the sentence I proposed, so if someone has a better suggestion along those lines, please share.

English is not my mother tongue so I can't really judge what else would fit, but the I think we could just use "were created by", "originated from" or "were established by" in place of "were pioneered by". Even though the exact meaning of these words differs slightly from each other, imo we can ignore that in this case because the purpose of the sentence is just to highlight that POC had the biggest impact on Djing, etc.

I'd avoid pioneered since (at least in the US), that phrase also references a history of white Americans invading land and claiming it as their own.

How do we fund the second cycle if we don't get enough donations?

And it's also possible that we stop after 2 cycles if our assessment determined we should rather do something else right? But it also says we participate how every many cycles we are able to raise funding for. That's a contradiction.

As an entirely online community that allows anyone to participate with a pseudonym, we don't know the exact demographic makeup of our contributors.
Our impression, however, is that the Mixxx contributor base is largely white, male, and either from the US or Western Europe.
This is especially disappointing given that [dance music culture exists thanks to people of color](https://www.dukeupress.edu/Love-Saves-the-Day/).

AFAIK Francis Grasso invented DJing, at least beatmatching and slip-cueing. But sure, almost all other major contributions I can think of were made by black artists.

Is this better?
