Case 3 Digital Waxup

Diagnostic Waxup

The goal of this case is to get familiar with some more of the Open Dental CAD specific tools. Positioning of teeth, and controlling the shape of teeth. Later we will use this same case file to create a temporary shell

Import the Models

We will use a data set which was originally for an occlusal guard. The bite registration was taken after a deprogrammer was worn and a wax bite registration with approximately 2mm between the teeth. We will therefore ignore the lower jaw/occlusion for that reason or we can pretend we are going to open the bite to this vertical.

Rotate and Align the Models, save the .blend file

Like in the previous cases, align the models so that the global axes are aligned with the Blender world axes. You can also add a nice material to each model. "lastname_waxup.blend"

Plan the Restorations

We will design the anterior 6 teeth. To simplify this exercise, you can choose to do less teeth. For example only do the centrals, or the anterior 4, or teeth 11,12,13. All the same concepts apply.

Simplify and Reduce the Cast

  • Isolate relevant anatomy Doing this is not 100% necessary, but it will speed up the performance of some functions.

  • Cast Reduction: We will reduce the cast by 1mm to give us room to design freely. We will borrow again the "Polytrim","Baseplate" and "Boolean" functions to accomplish this. First, use the polytrim tool to outline the planned teeth and duplicate the area. Stay approximately 1mm away from the gingigval crest because reduction will go 1mm past the margin you draw.

  • Method 1: Full Reduction Use this method if planning to create temporary shell later

  • Method 2: Facial Reduction

  • Boolean Difference

Get Some Teeth! VIDEO

  • Set the Master Model
  • Define a common insertion axis
  • Import teeth
  • Unhide the original cast
  • Use grab, rotate, scale (all the skills from warmup #1!!) to place your teeth at an initial starting point

Use "Flexi Tooth" to deform the teeth VIDEO
