Here is a list of items that I deem useful to get Whisper (and underlying protocols) more stable & secure + also get some additional features.
For the Status nim integration PoC, these are probably not necessary and only definition & implementation of the wrapper/API is needed.

General

• EIP-8 checking Check rlpx for EIP-8 compliance nim-eth#109
• Connection Limiting: Limit (incoming) connecting peers. nim-eth#107 & Might connect to more than allowed number of connections. nim-eth#108
• More unit tests + further & additional fuzzing on rlpx (& Whisper)
• Code coverage on these unit tests + perhaps also on fuzzing corpus
• Stretch: Integration tests with geth whisper implementation
• Metrics Add metrics to Whisper and peer pool nim-eth#110
• Have a basic standalone whisper node cli application: https://github.com/status-im/nimbus/issues/426
• Add to standalone Whisper node: mailclient, mailserver & discv5.
• Per IP peer limiting? Per IP-address peer limiting? nim-eth#111
• Stretch: Peer rating?
• Whisper privacy considerations: Investigate possible abuse of expiry & ttl field in envelope nim-eth#105 & Only start sending messages when connected to > 1 peers? nim-eth#106
• Add nix recipe for Nimbus, or at least for building the nim-status API
• Discovery v5 with Topic discovery to be able to find "whisper" registered nodes.
• Fix length calculation in PoW calculation nim-eth#130

• Refactor: Refactor whisper message structure + protocol code nim-eth#122
• Waku/0: Implement waku/0 - current Status whisper fork as is nim-eth#123

Regarding wrapper/API implementation

• Prefer not to require makeDeterministicID, but it is something used in the fork of Whisper for status-protocol-go, see Why is it necessary to work with deterministic IDs for Whisper key generation? status-protocol-go#112
• Return hash on nimbus_post: Return hash on Whisper/Waku postMessage nim-eth#132
• Make an json/rpc version of the current API
• Investigate integration with react-native directly

What do you think of Waku mode (with mailserver support) as a possible "trojan horse" to get Nim into the app as an option?
