02.02 Relationship between GitHub and SC

stuindhamma edited this page Jul 29, 2014 · 1 revision

GitHub is where SuttaCentral’s source code and data is stored and managed. It is like a very sophisticated shared folder (eg, Dropbox, Google Drive, etc.).

SC was originally (2007) a LAMP application (Linux, Apache, MySQL, PHP https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LAMP_%28software_bundle%29). Basically that means it’s somewhat like websites created in a web development too such as Dreamweaver, but also has software elements that adjusted the output. For example, it pulled out data from the database (MySQL) and to performed search functionality; two things that can’t be done with a simple website created with tools like Dreamweaver.

More recently (July 2013), SuttaCentral was changed to use Python instead of PHP. This change also brought along with a number of other modern web development components and techniques, including GitHub. In the process of doing so, it’s now a very different thing. It can longer be edited in tools like Dreamweaver. Also, even more recently, SuttaCentral no longers uses MySQL.
