Indeed, the lock acquired in uart_put_char() is uport->lock, i.e. not the same lock. Anyway, since the lock is not acquired, if uart_shutdown() is called, the last chunk of that function may release state->xmit.buf before its assigned to null, and cause the race above. To fix it, let's lock uport->lock when allocating/deallocating state->xmit.buf in addition to the per-port mutex. v2: switch to locking uport->lock on allocation/deallocation instead of locking the per-port mutex in uart_put_char. Note that since uport->lock is a spin lock, we have to switch the allocation to GFP_ATOMIC. v3: move the allocation outside the lock, so we can switch back to GFP_KERNEL Signed-off-by: Tycho Andersen <tycho@tycho.ws> Cc: stable <stable@vger.kernel.org> Signed-off-by: Greg Kroah-Hartman <gregkh@linuxfoundation.org>

spdxcheck.py complains: drivers/power/supply/goldfish_battery.c: 1:28 Invalid License ID: GPL which is correct because GPL is not a valid identifier. Of course this could have been caught by checkpatch.pl _before_ submitting or merging the patch. WARNING: 'SPDX-License-Identifier: GPL' is not supported in LICENSES/... #19: FILE: drivers/power/supply/goldfish_battery.c:1: +// SPDX-License-Identifier: GPL Which is absolutely hillarious as the commit introducing this wreckage says in the changelog: There was a checkpatch complain: "Missing or malformed SPDX-License-Identifier tag". Oh well. Replacing a checkpatch warning by a different checkpatch warning is a really useful exercise. Use the proper GPL-2.0 identifier which is what the boiler plate in the file had originally. If io_allocate_scq_urings() fails to allocate an sq_* region, it will call io_mem_free() for any previously allocated regions, but leave dangling pointers to these regions in the ctx. Any regions which have not yet been allocated are left NULL. Note that when returning -EOVERFLOW, the previously allocated sq_ring is not freed, which appears to be an unintentional leak. When io_allocate_scq_urings() fails, io_uring_create() will call io_ring_ctx_wait_and_kill(), which calls io_mem_free() on all the sq_* regions, assuming the pointers are valid and not NULL. This can result in pages being freed multiple times, which has been observed to corrupt the page state, leading to subsequent fun. This can also result in virt_to_page() on NULL, resulting in the use of bogus page addresses, and yet more subsequent fun. The latter can be detected with CONFIG_DEBUG_VIRTUAL on arm64. Adding a cleanup path to io_allocate_scq_urings() complicates the logic, so let's leave it to io_ring_ctx_free() to consistently free these pointers, and simplify the io_allocate_scq_urings() error paths. A deadlock with this stacktrace was observed. The loop thread does a GFP_KERNEL allocation, it calls into dm-bufio shrinker and the shrinker depends on I/O completion in the dm-bufio subsystem. In order to fix the deadlock (and other similar ones), we set the flag PF_MEMALLOC_NOIO at loop thread entry. Masoud Sharbiani noticed that commit 29ef680 ("memcg, oom: move out_of_memory back to the charge path") broke memcg OOM called from __xfs_filemap_fault() path. It turned out that try_charge() is retrying forever without making forward progress because mem_cgroup_oom(GFP_NOFS) cannot invoke the OOM killer due to commit 3da88fb ("mm, oom: move GFP_NOFS check to out_of_memory"). Allowing forced charge due to being unable to invoke memcg OOM killer will lead to global OOM situation. Also, just returning -ENOMEM will be risky because OOM path is lost and some paths (e.g. get_user_pages()) will leak -ENOMEM. Therefore, invoking memcg OOM killer (despite GFP_NOFS) will be the only choice we can choose for now. Until 29ef680, we were able to invoke memcg OOM killer when GFP_KERNEL reclaim failed [1]. But since 29ef680, we need to invoke memcg OOM killer when GFP_NOFS reclaim failed [2]. Although in the past we did invoke memcg OOM killer for GFP_NOFS [3], we might get pre-mature memcg OOM reports due to this patch. When the client hits reconnect it iterates over the mid pending queue marking entries for retry and moving them to a temporary list to issue callbacks later without holding GlobalMid_Lock. In the same time there is no guarantee that mids can't be removed from the temporary list or even freed completely by another thread. It may cause a temporary list corruption: [ 430.454897] list_del corruption. prev->next should be ffff98d3a8f316c0, but was 2e885cb266355469 [ 430.464668] ------------[ cut here ]------------ [ 430.466569] kernel BUG at lib/list_debug.c:51! Also move mid cleanup logic from DeleteMidQEntry to _cifs_mid_q_entry_release which is called when the last reference to a particular mid is put. This allows to avoid any use-after-free of response buffers. The patch needs to be backported to stable kernels. A stable tag is not mentioned below because the patch doesn't apply cleanly to any actively maintained stable kernel. The only difference is bpf_send_signal() helper instead of bpf_get_stack() helper. The above deadlock is triggered with a perf_sw_event. Similar to Commit eac9153, the below almost identical reproducer used tracepoint point sched/sched_switch so the issue can be easily caught. /* stress_test.c */ #include <stdio.h> #include <stdlib.h> #include <sys/mman.h> #include <pthread.h> #include <sys/types.h> #include <sys/stat.h> #include <fcntl.h> #define THREAD_COUNT 1000 char *filename; void *worker(void *p) { void *ptr; int fd; char *pptr; fd = open(filename, O_RDONLY); if (fd < 0) return NULL; while (1) { struct timespec ts = {0, 1000 + rand() % 2000}; ptr = mmap(NULL, 4096 * 64, PROT_READ, MAP_PRIVATE, fd, 0); usleep(1); if (ptr == MAP_FAILED) { printf("failed to mmap\n"); break; } munmap(ptr, 4096 * 64); usleep(1); pptr = malloc(1); usleep(1); pptr[0] = 1; usleep(1); free(pptr); usleep(1); nanosleep(&ts, NULL); } close(fd); return NULL; } int main(int argc, char *argv[]) { void *ptr; int i; pthread_t threads[THREAD_COUNT]; if (argc < 2) return 0; filename = argv[1]; for (i = 0; i < THREAD_COUNT; i++) { if (pthread_create(threads + i, NULL, worker, NULL)) { fprintf(stderr, "Error creating thread\n"); return 0; } } for (i = 0; i < THREAD_COUNT; i++) pthread_join(threads[i], NULL); return 0; } and the following command: 1. run `stress_test /bin/ls` in one windown 2. hack bcc trace.py with the following change: --- a/tools/trace.py +++ b/tools/trace.py @@ -513,6 +513,7 @@ BPF_PERF_OUTPUT(%s); __data.tgid = __tgid; __data.pid = __pid; bpf_get_current_comm(&__data.comm, sizeof(__data.comm)); + bpf_send_signal(10); %s %s %s.perf_submit(%s, &__data, sizeof(__data)); 3. in a different window run ./trace.py -p $(pidof stress_test) t:sched:sched_switch The deadlock can be reproduced in our production system. Similar to Song's fix, the fix is to delay sending signal if irqs is disabled to avoid deadlocks involving with rq_lock. With this change, my above stress-test in our production system won't cause deadlock any more. I also implemented a scale-down version of reproducer in the selftest (a subsequent commit). This is not exactly the callstack in our production environment, but sympotom is similar and both locks are using spin_lock_irqsave() to acquire the lock, and both involves rq_lock. The fix to delay sending signal when irq is disabled also fixed this issue. Similar to Commit eac9153, the below almost identical reproducer used tracepoint point sched/sched_switch so the issue can be easily caught. /* stress_test.c */ #include <stdio.h> #include <stdlib.h> #include <sys/mman.h> #include <pthread.h> #include <sys/types.h> #include <sys/stat.h> #include <fcntl.h> #define THREAD_COUNT 1000 char *filename; void *worker(void *p) { void *ptr; int fd; char *pptr; fd = open(filename, O_RDONLY); if (fd < 0) return NULL; while (1) { struct timespec ts = {0, 1000 + rand() % 2000}; ptr = mmap(NULL, 4096 * 64, PROT_READ, MAP_PRIVATE, fd, 0); usleep(1); if (ptr == MAP_FAILED) { printf("failed to mmap\n"); break; } munmap(ptr, 4096 * 64); usleep(1); pptr = malloc(1); usleep(1); pptr[0] = 1; usleep(1); free(pptr); usleep(1); nanosleep(&ts, NULL); } close(fd); return NULL; } int main(int argc, char *argv[]) { void *ptr; int i; pthread_t threads[THREAD_COUNT]; if (argc < 2) return 0; filename = argv[1]; for (i = 0; i < THREAD_COUNT; i++) { if (pthread_create(threads + i, NULL, worker, NULL)) { fprintf(stderr, "Error creating thread\n"); return 0; } } for (i = 0; i < THREAD_COUNT; i++) pthread_join(threads[i], NULL); return 0; } and the following command: 1. run `stress_test /bin/ls` in one windown 2. hack bcc trace.py with the following change: # --- a/tools/trace.py # +++ b/tools/trace.py @@ -513,6 +513,7 @@ BPF_PERF_OUTPUT(%s); __data.tgid = __tgid; __data.pid = __pid; bpf_get_current_comm(&__data.comm, sizeof(__data.comm)); + bpf_send_signal(10); %s %s %s.perf_submit(%s, &__data, sizeof(__data)); 3. in a different window run ./trace.py -p $(pidof stress_test) t:sched:sched_switch The deadlock can be reproduced in our production system. With latest bpf-next, it complains for the following potential deadlock. This is not exactly the callstack in our production environment, but sympotom is similar and both locks are using spin_lock_irqsave() to acquire the lock, and both involves rq_lock. The fix to delay sending signal when irq is disabled also fixed this issue. This fix is for a failure that occurred in the DWARF unwind perf test. Stack unwinders may probe memory when looking for frames. Memory sanitizer will poison and track uninitialized memory on the stack, and on the heap if the value is copied to the heap. This can lead to false memory sanitizer failures for the use of an uninitialized value. Avoid this problem by removing the poison on the copied stack. Calling btrfs_qgroup_reserve_meta_prealloc from btrfs_delayed_inode_reserve_metadata can result in flushing delalloc while holding a transaction and delayed node locks. This is deadlock prone. In the past multiple commits: * ae5e070 ("btrfs: qgroup: don't try to wait flushing if we're already holding a transaction") * 6f23277 ("btrfs: qgroup: don't commit transaction when we already hold the handle") Tried to solve various aspects of this but this was always a whack-a-mole game. Unfortunately those 2 fixes don't solve a deadlock scenario involving btrfs_delayed_node::mutex. Namely, one thread can call btrfs_dirty_inode as a result of reading a file and modifying its atime: PID: 6963 TASK: ffff8c7f3f94c000 CPU: 2 COMMAND: "test" #0 __schedule at ffffffffa529e07d #1 schedule at ffffffffa529e4ff #2 schedule_timeout at ffffffffa52a1bdd #3 wait_for_completion at ffffffffa529eeea <-- sleeps with delayed node mutex held #4 start_delalloc_inodes at ffffffffc0380db5 #5 btrfs_start_delalloc_snapshot at ffffffffc0393836 #6 try_flush_qgroup at ffffffffc03f04b2 #7 __btrfs_qgroup_reserve_meta at ffffffffc03f5bb6 <-- tries to reserve space and starts delalloc inodes. #8 btrfs_delayed_update_inode at ffffffffc03e31aa <-- acquires delayed node mutex #9 btrfs_update_inode at ffffffffc0385ba8 #10 btrfs_dirty_inode at ffffffffc038627b <-- TRANSACTIION OPENED #11 touch_atime at ffffffffa4cf0000 #12 generic_file_read_iter at ffffffffa4c1f123 #13 new_sync_read at ffffffffa4ccdc8a #14 vfs_read at ffffffffa4cd0849 #15 ksys_read at ffffffffa4cd0bd1 #16 do_syscall_64 at ffffffffa4a052eb #17 entry_SYSCALL_64_after_hwframe at ffffffffa540008c This will cause an asynchronous work to flush the delalloc inodes to happen which can try to acquire the same delayed_node mutex: PID: 455 TASK: ffff8c8085fa4000 CPU: 5 COMMAND: "kworker/u16:30" #0 __schedule at ffffffffa529e07d #1 schedule at ffffffffa529e4ff #2 schedule_preempt_disabled at ffffffffa529e80a #3 __mutex_lock at ffffffffa529fdcb <-- goes to sleep, never wakes up. #4 btrfs_delayed_update_inode at ffffffffc03e3143 <-- tries to acquire the mutex #5 btrfs_update_inode at ffffffffc0385ba8 <-- this is the same inode that pid 6963 is holding #6 cow_file_range_inline.constprop.78 at ffffffffc0386be7 #7 cow_file_range at ffffffffc03879c1 #8 btrfs_run_delalloc_range at ffffffffc038894c #9 writepage_delalloc at ffffffffc03a3c8f #10 __extent_writepage at ffffffffc03a4c01 #11 extent_write_cache_pages at ffffffffc03a500b #12 extent_writepages at ffffffffc03a6de2 #13 do_writepages at ffffffffa4c277eb #14 __filemap_fdatawrite_range at ffffffffa4c1e5bb #15 btrfs_run_delalloc_work at ffffffffc0380987 <-- starts running delayed nodes #16 normal_work_helper at ffffffffc03b706c #17 process_one_work at ffffffffa4aba4e4 #18 worker_thread at ffffffffa4aba6fd #19 kthread at ffffffffa4ac0a3d #20 ret_from_fork at ffffffffa54001ff To fully address those cases the complete fix is to never issue any flushing while holding the transaction or the delayed node lock. This patch achieves it by calling qgroup_reserve_meta directly which will either succeed without flushing or will fail and return -EDQUOT. In the latter case that return value is going to be propagated to btrfs_dirty_inode which will fallback to start a new transaction. That's fine as the majority of time we expect the inode will have BTRFS_DELAYED_NODE_INODE_DIRTY flag set which will result in directly copying the in-memory state. I got several memory leak reports from Asan with a simple command. It was because VDSO is not released due to the refcount. After commit f2d3b9a ("ARM: 9220/1: amba: Remove deferred device addition"), it became possible for amba_read_periphid() to be invoked concurrently from two threads for a particular AMBA device. Consider the case where a thread (T0) is registering an AMBA driver, and searching for all of the devices it can match with on the AMBA bus. Suppose that another thread (T1) is executing the deferred probe work, and is searching through all of the AMBA drivers on the bus for a driver that matches a particular AMBA device. Assume that both threads begin operating on the same AMBA device and the device's peripheral ID is still unknown. In this scenario, the amba_match() function will be invoked for the same AMBA device by both threads, which means amba_read_periphid() can also be invoked by both threads, and both threads will be able to manipulate the AMBA device's pclk pointer without any synchronization. It's possible that one thread will initialize the pclk pointer, then the other thread will re-initialize it, overwriting the previous value, and both will race to free the same pclk, resulting in a use-after-free for whichever thread frees the pclk last. Add a lock per AMBA device to synchronize the handling with detecting the peripheral ID to avoid the use-after-free scenario. The following KFENCE bug report helped detect this problem: ================================================================== BUG: KFENCE: use-after-free read in clk_disable+0x14/0x34 Use-after-free read at 0x(ptrval) (in kfence-#19): clk_disable+0x14/0x34 amba_read_periphid+0xdc/0x134 amba_match+0x3c/0x84 __driver_attach+0x20/0x158 bus_for_each_dev+0x74/0xc0 bus_add_driver+0x154/0x1e8 driver_register+0x88/0x11c do_one_initcall+0x8c/0x2fc kernel_init_freeable+0x190/0x220 kernel_init+0x10/0x108 ret_from_fork+0x14/0x3c 0x0 kfence-#19: 0x(ptrval)-0x(ptrval), size=36, cache=kmalloc-64 allocated by task 8 on cpu 0 at 11.629931s: clk_hw_create_clk+0x38/0x134 amba_get_enable_pclk+0x10/0x68 amba_read_periphid+0x28/0x134 amba_match+0x3c/0x84 __device_attach_driver+0x2c/0xc4 bus_for_each_drv+0x80/0xd0 __device_attach+0xb0/0x1f0 bus_probe_device+0x88/0x90 deferred_probe_work_func+0x8c/0xc0 process_one_work+0x23c/0x690 worker_thread+0x34/0x488 kthread+0xd4/0xfc ret_from_fork+0x14/0x3c 0x0 freed by task 8 on cpu 0 at 11.630095s: amba_read_periphid+0xec/0x134 amba_match+0x3c/0x84 __device_attach_driver+0x2c/0xc4 bus_for_each_drv+0x80/0xd0 __device_attach+0xb0/0x1f0 bus_probe_device+0x88/0x90 deferred_probe_work_func+0x8c/0xc0 process_one_work+0x23c/0x690 worker_thread+0x34/0x488 kthread+0xd4/0xfc ret_from_fork+0x14/0x3c 0x0 Cc: Saravana Kannan <saravanak@google.com> Cc: patches@armlinux.org.uk Fixes: f2d3b9a ("ARM: 9220/1: amba: Remove deferred device addition") Reported-by: Guenter Roeck <linux@roeck-us.net> Tested-by: Guenter Roeck <linux@roeck-us.net> Signed-off-by: Isaac J. DRM commit_tails() will disable downstream crtc/encoder/bridge if both disable crtc is required and crtc->active is set before pushing a new frame downstream. There is a rare case that user space display manager issue an extra screen update immediately followed by close DRM device while down stream display interface is disabled. This extra screen update will timeout due to the downstream interface is disabled but will cause crtc->active be set. Hence the followed commit_tails() called by drm_release() will pass the disable downstream crtc/encoder/bridge conditions checking even downstream interface is disabled. This cause the crash to happen at dp_bridge_disable() due to it trying to access the main link register to push the idle pattern out while main link clocks is disabled. This patch adds atomic_check to prevent the extra frame will not be pushed down if display interface is down so that crtc->active will not be set neither. This will fail the conditions checking of disabling down stream crtc/encoder/bridge which prevent drm_release() from calling dp_bridge_disable() so that crash at dp_bridge_disable() prevented. There is no protection in the DRM framework to check if the display pipeline has been already disabled before trying again. The only check is the crtc_state->active but this is controlled by usermode using UAPI. Hence if the usermode sets this and then crashes, the driver needs to protect against double disable. When doing link mtu negotiation, a malicious peer may send Activate msg with a very small mtu, e.g. 4 in Shuang's testing, without checking for the minimum mtu, l->mtu will be set to 4 in tipc_link_proto_rcv(), then n->links[bearer_id].mtu is set to 4294967228, which is a overflow of '4 - INT_H_SIZE - EMSG_OVERHEAD' in tipc_link_mss(). With tipc_link.mtu = 4, tipc_link_xmit() kept printing the warning: tipc: Too large msg, purging xmit list 1 5 0 40 4! tipc: Too large msg, purging xmit list 1 15 0 60 4! And with tipc_link_entry.mtu 4294967228, a huge skb was allocated in named_distribute(), and when purging it in tipc_link_xmit(), a crash was even caused: general protection fault, probably for non-canonical address 0x2100001011000dd: 0000 [#1] PREEMPT SMP PTI CPU: 0 PID: 0 Comm: swapper/0 Kdump: loaded Not tainted 6.3.0.neta #19 RIP: 0010:kfree_skb_list_reason+0x7e/0x1f0 Call Trace: <IRQ> skb_release_data+0xf9/0x1d0 kfree_skb_reason+0x40/0x100 tipc_link_xmit+0x57a/0x740 [tipc] tipc_node_xmit+0x16c/0x5c0 [tipc] tipc_named_node_up+0x27f/0x2c0 [tipc] tipc_node_write_unlock+0x149/0x170 [tipc] tipc_rcv+0x608/0x740 [tipc] tipc_udp_recv+0xdc/0x1f0 [tipc] udp_queue_rcv_one_skb+0x33e/0x620 udp_unicast_rcv_skb.isra.72+0x75/0x90 __udp4_lib_rcv+0x56d/0xc20 ip_protocol_deliver_rcu+0x100/0x2d0 This patch fixes it by checking the new mtu against tipc_bearer_min_mtu(), and not updating mtu if it is too small. If neigh update is running at this time, the following encaps of the flow can't hold the encap_tbl_lock and sleep. If neigh update thread is waiting for that flow's init_done, deadlock happens. Fix it by holding lock outside of the for loop. If neigh update is running, prevent encap flows from offloading. Since the lock is held outside of the for loop, concurrent creation of encap entries is not allowed. So remove unnecessary wait_for_completion call for res_ready. For historical reasons, when bridge device is in promisc mode, packets that are directed to the taps follow bridge input hook path. This patch adds a workaround to reset conntrack for these packets. Jianbo Liu reports warning splats in their test infrastructure where cloned packets reach the br_netfilter input hook to confirm the conntrack object. Scratch one bit from BR_INPUT_SKB_CB to annotate that this packet has reached the input hook because it is passed up to the bridge device to reach the taps. vhost_worker will call tun call backs to receive packets. If too many illegal packets arrives, tun_do_read will keep dumping packet contents. When console is enabled, it will costs much more cpu time to dump packet and soft lockup will be detected. net_ratelimit mechanism can be used to limit the dumping rate.
