CNB Training Procedures

We look forward to your participation in the Penn Computerized Neurocognitive Battery (CNB) Training and Certification processes. We hope to “set you up for success” as you work with participants and administer the CNB as part of your study. We have designed the CNB training plan as a series of “modules” that will help you prepare for demonstrating your qualification to administer a standardized CNB assessment and complete the CNB Training certification process.

It is important to watch and complete each module because the quiz at the end will include questions from each.

An overall score based on the quiz questions is calculated at the end of the learning modules. A minimum score of 90% is required to pass to the final steps of the training process, which will include recording your own video of a standardized assessment for the CNB trainer to review.

Timeline for Training

We recommend planning to complete the CNB training process within 14 calendar days from receipt of the redcap link. We suggest completing all of the modules (1-4) in one sitting, if at all possible.

Training Process Overview

The training involves the following learning modules

1. Introduction

This learning module introduces the CNB in the context of historical neuropsychological assessments and neuroimaging. The module describes the concept and design of the CNB, as well as presents data on the validity and use of the CNB within the field. The module consists of a recording of Ruben’s CNB Introduction presentation from July 22, 2021.

2. Project Kickoff

This module introduces the specific CNB batteries and related tests for the project. Specifically, the module covers 1) administration technique, 2) frequently asked questions, and 3) guided walkthroughs of procedures to follow within the CNB interface. The module consists of a recording of Allison’s presentation from the CNB Kickoff on July 22,2021. A quiz will follow the completion module to ensures sufficient understanding of the covered materials.

3. Test Specific Videos

Test specific training video modules are designed to illustrate how to administer a particular test, with particular focus on 1) the optimal cadence and intonation when reading the instructions to the participant, as well as, 2) specific actions you should take with the computer mouse when administering the test in person. A quiz will follow each test module to ensure sufficient understanding of the covered materials.

4. Full Battery Assessment

The “Full Battery Assessment” is a video demonstration of how to administer a complete CNB battery, from start to finish. A quiz will follow this module to ensure sufficient understanding of the covered materials.

A passing score of 90% is required for each of the modules 2 through 4 quizzes. If the trainee fails to attain this proficiency then the trainee will be contacted by me for further instructions. Once this requirement has been satisfied then the trainee will be permitted to advance onto modules 5-7 in the CNB training process.

5. Self-Guided Practice

We recommend practicing administering the CNB battery (all tasks, from start to finish) a minimum of 4 times before you record your Standardized Assessment Video to ensure you are familiar with all procedures, instructions, optimal cadence and intonation for administration of the materials.

6. Standardized Assessment Video Recording & Submission

All trainees are required to record a video of themselves administering the CNB Battery to a practice participant for review and feedback by the CNB team.

Requirements for recording your assessment:

    • A practice participant

you will need an individual to administer the CNB to, from start-to-finish under the guise that this is a real assessment. This person can be a colleague, friend, partner or other adult who agrees to be video recorded as part of your training submission. PLEASE DO NOT ASK A RESEARCH PARTICIPANT FOR ANY STUDY YOU ARE AFFILIATED WITH TO BE YOUR PRACTICE PARTICIPANT!

    • A video camera to record the assessment room / environment

Both yourself (assessor) and the practice participant must be visible in this assessment.
** You may use a smartphone in lieu of a built in or external video camera for the recording of the room/environment of the testing space.

    • Microphone to record the assessment

Both yourself (assessor) and the practice participant must be audible in this assessment.

    • Screen sharing / screen visible for the recording

Ensure that the screen of the computer being used to complete the CNB is fully visible.

We strongly recommend the use of video conferencing software such as Zoom, WebEx, GoTo Meeting, BlueJeans to enable both the practice participant AND yourself be visible on video camera, while simultaneously enabling a screen recording.

Videos submitted in which the practice participant, assessor and screen are not visible for the duration of the assessment will not meet minimum criteria for review.

The assessment video you upload is on a secure server which is accessible by limited members on the CNB team who are responsible for reviewing and training. We do not share the video with anyone or give anyone outside access to the server. We will not use your video without your explicit permission for any other purposes.

7. Feedback and CNB Training Certification Determination (Pass/Fail)

The standardized video assessment recording will be reviewed by a CNB trainer within 10 days, upon receipt of the video. Optimally, the trainee will receive a "certificate of completion" for the CNB training upon a passing score. If the trainee does not pass the CNB certification criteria, I will be in touch with next steps. The trainee will receive a detailed feedback report based off of their submitted CNB Video Assessment for either of the aforementioned outcomes.
