How to update statuspage during industrial action

saimaghafoor edited this page Apr 5, 2023 · 3 revisions

Update the status page whenever there is planned industrial action. Users will need to know what impact any industrial action will have on them.

When to update the status page

We are usually aware when there is planned industrial action. Update the status page 1 week before planned action.

Update the cross government slack channel once the incident has been added.

What to write

Find out how to write in plain English and follow the GOV.UK Notify style guide.

Follow guidance on how to update our status page for all other incidents.

When you create an incident, change the status from ‘investigating’ to ‘monitoring’.

Incident name

The incident name should tell users what the problem is.

For example:

Possible disruption because of planned industrial action

Message body

The start of the message should make it clear:

  • when the action is
  • who will take part in it if possible

For example:

There is planned industrial action by the Civil Service on Wednesday 15 March 2023. This includes the Government Digital Service.

Next we need to tell users what the impact may be.

For example:

  • avoid sending letters where possible
  • choose first class postage to reduce the chance of delays
  • wait until the industrial action is over to send letters

Also include when we will provide more information if this is appropriate.

For example:

We will continue to monitor this for any further issues.

How to close an industrial action incident

Resolve the incident as soon as we know there is not likely to be any further impact on users. This is usually the next day.

For example:

Industrial action took place on Wednesday 15 March.

Industrial action has finished.

If there is likely to be an ongoing issue we should provide an update as soon as possible.
