Nick let the group know about LYRASIS' allocation of Jonathan Green to the CLAW project, and thanked LYRASIS for the contribution, and welcomed Jonathan Green.

1 - CLAW Documentation

Bryan: It can be difficult to get 1.x users on board without giving them a context based on what they know. Documentation on the differences could help communication and get us better use cases.

Nick: You are not alone in this! There are some documents that attempted to cover this, but some may need updating:

Bryan will have a look at the existing documents and see how they address the need, may look into updating/expanding on them. Will try to report at the next meeting on what needs to be done. There will be a ticket to track this (Issue #510).

2 - Tickets, newbie tickets, and mentorship

An idea from Nick and Adam.

Adam: Seeing a lot of questions about how to get involved, especially by those interested in advancing the project, not just using it.

Adam drops from the call in the middle of a sentence that sounds really interesting. Nick takes over.

Nick: The idea is basically: "What if everyone who takes a ticket in CLAW was guaranteed a mentor to help them through it?" The concept is, if you are new and you want to take something on, one of the Committers or other people close to the project will be there as a safety net, in irc and GitHub.

John: This would be great. Given a few hours a week for this, still getting up to speed. Anything that speeds up that process would make it easier to contribute.

Nat: Also would like to have this available. Some newbie tickets can still be fairly involved. Having a formal resource to help out would be good.

Nick: Mentors should be Committers. That is in the description for the role. It also increases the base of people who may become Committers, so everybody benefits.

Jared: One factor: does everyone know who everyone is in irc?

Nick: Committers are listed here

Melissa: Will add irc nicks there if the group approves.

Danny: Also suggests making use of the mailing list. It hasn't been used much for CLAW yet, but it's very public and searchable, so it reaches more people. And everyone on these calls is on the islandora-dev list too.

Nick: taking it back to the mentorship idea, how to proceed: we talk to each other in irc, ask for help, and if you want help on something, ask and we'll schedule something. Try to be as transparent as possible so that others can benefit as well.

Kim: you could have open mentoring sessions using irc + conference call for other people to join in and listen as well

Jared: that's a useful idea, but it makes it more of a presentation, which could be more work to put together. And more of a challenge because few have the knowledge right now to give a 'presentation.'

Nick: Agrees. Our resources are too limited, preparing learning materials takes time, and they become dated quickly while the stack is still in development.

Adam: Is very specifically suggesting one-on-one connection.

Nick: If you want to use the weekly call to ask, please do! Just make sure it goes on the agenda so there's time and a record.

3 - Islandoracon

Melissa: Just noting that the Early Bird rate for Islandoracon is ending on Jan 31st. Lots of CLAW content at the con, so if you're going, register before Tuesday to save money.
